you've got some work ahead, all you can really do is cut it out and replace it i guess

As ThouUte said, Cut out ALL rust and replace it with new metal. anything else will lead to more repairs in the future

Here is what worked for me...

I bought a big sheet of steel for around $30 at my local metal shop, I told the guy what I was doing and he reccomended a thickness suitable for my car.

I bought a panel beating set for around $30 from my local automotive shop (Super cheap auto).
With absolutly no experience of panel beating I made my own rust repair section, It is not hard but it requires patience to make things line up correctly.
It is best to make your part from a thin sheet of cardboard first, once you are happy with your shape you can transfer it over to your metal sheet.
The section in the pic below was around an hour of work,I used a panel beating set, bench vice, Vice grips and some flat blocks of metal to make this part.

I made my repair section a little larger than it needed to be and placed it behind the hole so I had around 5mm of overlap.

Once you have cut out the rust and made your repair sections, it is time to weld.
(I am a complete novice on the welder but here is what has worked for me).

  • Remove all rust and clean off any paint, grease or oil. (This is extremely important).
  • Make all joints to be welded as close as you can. (They should fit like a glove if possible).
  • Use a scrap piece of sheet metal to set your welder.
  • Have a good clean earthing point to your car. (This should be as clean as your repair if you can).
  • Only weld small ammounts at a time.
  • Use a damp cloth to remove heat from the panel around your welds.
  • If you are filling small holes, I have used a block of copper behind the sheet to stop the weld from blowing a hole in the sheet metal. (The weld will not stick to the copper).

This is more of a motivation thing, but just attack one repair at a time.
If you cut out all the rust in one go you will find yourself looking at a car full of holes and wondering if you will ever finish it.
If you attack one repair at a time you should see finished repairs each time you work on your 1000.

ok cool im just starting to learn how to weld im good at thick metal.
the hardest part for me will be up under the dash as its inpossible to get to.
what did you use for a welder as i will need to go buy one.

I used a gasless M.I.G. It is frustrating to use at times because I bought the cheapest one avaliable, so it has very little adjustment. (and I am still not great at it).
If I was to do it again I would save up and buy a better M.I.G. welder.
I would look for more adjustment in the power settings, Gas and the ability to use smaller wire sizes.
All the forums I read suggested 0.6mm wire for car panels.

Lotsa work there.

Derrick, I'd suggest you get the shell soda blasted, or even sand blasted but soda blasting leaves a better finish and less residual mess.

Leave the rust holes open and cut the edges of the holes to make a larger opening and shape the opening of that hole so that is easy to make a replacement shape. You can request to have these openings blasted as well, tricky part is to paint the inside of them but if you cut a bigger opening it is easier to paint (a brush is easier to use in this instance as it can get into the deeper parts where a spray gun might miss- presentation doesn't matter as it will be welded up anyway).
o ya tones of work took of drivers fender alot worse ( pass side for you guys) i got pics just adding a link to my photobucket album will be updated aften.

You can just get it spot blasted, not the entire car. Really looks like it needs it, there is some hardcore rust there.

What are you going to do about the guards? The nose of each guard looks pretty bad. Shame it was left to get into this sort of condition.
so i little update on the car i have taken it to a datsun meet got alot of attention. i won a little award for the rattiest ratsun.
i have moved into a nice big shop today and its now sits there and should progress better now that i have the space. so i hope to post more up.

last week i picked up a car i have alwats wanted needs more work then the 1000 but still sweet. its a 1965 datsun 1600 roadster.

so here are some pics of the new shop with the b10 and 311 in the new place.

That 1000 is mint, I bet you got motivated for your project after seeing one in person that was all together and finished.

No worries about the trims, did you check out the length for your indicators?
Let me know which ones you need and i'll get some off to you.

Yep it sure did. I have not made it out to the shop yet.
Do u happen to have the silver trim that goes around the windshield and rear window. That's one thing he red cars needs

Oh no, I had a chance to get some last week.
It was not all in good nick, some of it was bent but it would have been a start.
Thou ute might still have some of it. It was from a B10 2 door he had so it would work out perfect.
I have the corners and centre joiners, i'll put them in with your lights.

It might be worth seeing if he still has the long bits before the car goes
The car was pretty much a shell with nothing left but big holes and a dodgy rollcage, I think it has a date with the car crusher some time soon.

He is also looking for a clock that goes up on the dash does any one have one I never knew about it just seen the hole

The clock was a factory option, have a look through the owners manual in the download section to see a pic of one.

The only one I have seen was one listed on yahoo a few months back.
