Steering box re-build

I don't think anything on a 1000 is overly heavy.

I have had thoughts of a rack and pinion set up when I was considering engine swaps.
But the more I thought about geometry the scarier it seemed.

I would think getting the rack cut to the correct length will be the biggest thing to get right so you don't create excessive bump steer.
I would imagine matching the length of the rack and rack ends to the lengths of the cross link and tie rod ends would be optimal, assuming the rack mounts in the same place as the old cross link.

on that note...
Looking from the top down at the cross rod, the distances forward/back change because of the arc the steering arm/idler arms take through their travel.
and a rack would be fixed at that point, so there would be some differences in how things steered.

It would be easy enough to get the steering looking right with the wheels pointed straight forward and the car sitting at a fixed ride height,
But once the wheels are turning left/right and going up/down things may be slightly different.

It was more than I was willing to take on.

Once you were happy with lengths and mounting positions I think the swap would be pretty straight forward, not too many parts to mount in a rack and pinion setup.

I would be very interested in seeing progress updates/photos if you decide to go down this road.
It is a very tempting swap. Im just not confident in my own abilitys,
I don't know enough about steering to introduce new geometry into a steering system.

What benefits would you hope to gain for a street 1000 with rack & pinion?

Apart from somewhat less backlash and a slightly improved feel why would you go ahead with this?

Race-car I could understand but for a streeter it really is a headache for arguably minimal gains (unless you had exsiting clearance issues with an aftermarlet engine, but even then wouldn't you be better off revising the existing linkages/steering).

Keen to hear.
Anyone?
Sorry a bit late Chris to the reply...
R&P and what we have is like night and day for any driving.

I witnessed the RP conversion on my R100 coupe when I owned it and after driving an
RS2000 for years I decided RP was much better for everyday use and for the track.
Not to mention cheaper in the end which worked out at 160aud 22 years ago.
I used a rwd 626 steering column and commonho rack which was easy to cut up and
the main things to work out are to make sure the rack is placed exactly on the original
steering rod location when the car is going straight otherwise nasty bump steer.
Best to lock your steering wheel in this position like what is used in wheel alignments
with the guides installed while on the machine then taking measurements and use some
paint pen to mark exactly the location of things when the fronts are straight.

If you find a rack that is exactly as the original distance from your steering knuckles then
its much easier but I havent done this yet but a good start is look at the countless of small hatch
backs on the road eg. suzuki swift. However not vital as shortening can be done anyways.

The steering will be much lighter again if the rack is from a heavier car than the 1000
which makes it stronger. The weight of the 1000 guarantees this for 99% of cars.

I repeat R&P is the ultimate steering for any car it just transforms the feel and response.

champion! for some reason I dont get any of the linking tools up just shadows of them
not full colour like the image and text tools.
