Single 13B PP Turbo Rotary engine block, ex-Sport sedan Escort Mk1 - Sold

For sale:
Unique Ex PP Turbo single 13B rotor sport sedan engine block

Item Condition:
Excellent condition except for Reasonable PP Rotor housing

Extra Info:
Was used in a Mk1 Escort and made aroun 280hp at the engine built in the mid 1990s
until owner went to the wrong engine a heavy Cleveland big bore after blowing the
clutch at 11,500rpm and damaging the firewall and some of the tunnel.
I have sourced machined R5 side endplates untouched port wise as original turbo PP
setup endplate, dowels & rotor were misplaced. The PP rotor housing is still there with
higher inductioin position to suit better timing for boost.
Have all bearings, counterweights just missing rotor which was a stock Rx5 one,
sump and needs new seals. Perfect E-shaft all oiled and wrapped up.
Also cast iron custom brazed single turbo manifold to suit 12at made custom from 12at
exhaust manifold. Front timing cover with all internals for pump, bearing and other bits
even spare set of dowels to suit but need shortening pretty much just needs Rotor,
custom sump and your choice of induction, turbo and port/assemble it to your needs.
Will weigh about 47Kg all complete and can make 120hp NA or 220hp Turbo at the wheels.

Can also be used as an ultralite engine, trike, motorbike custom or lightweight turbo 1000,
mazda 800, lotus 7 replica or deadly lawnmower

Very interesting and most intriguing! I wish I had enough coin to make the purchase.
Shes definitely a compact simple little donk runs on 2 plugs lightweight
with a single 2.5 inch exhaust all the way from the single port outlet.
@ 47kg or 13kg lighter than a bare a10 engine they are quite powerful.
Take smaller lighter gearboxes from an S1 or S2 without destroying them
like a twin rotor 13B would and the late Leon Prommet (rotary master)
ran one daily in his S3 rx7 for years with 140hp ate using single
downdraft 45mm weber, headers and full race extend port.
I really have to finish the stroker CA and the Suzuki M18a for the
coupe and sedan respectively so gotta let her go unless I change my
mind again like usual & hold on in case a 1000 ute comes along.
Will also supply a sump, original rx3 crossmember, rotary engine mounts,
and front mount type front timing case and an alloy waterpump housing.

I'm completely bemused. I have never gone near a rotary. Would definitely give this a go if I had the spare cash. Interesting stuff. Hope the sale goes to someone who will put it together and use it.
At an estimate, how much more cash would have to put into this to get it running?
Depending on wether you source parts from ebay

eg.
new seals

mazda, forums, auto-one, repco or rotary workshop it can cost from 500 to 1500 to finish this rebuilt single rotor all depending on your choice of hp, using the following video which there are many available on cd.
The most tedious bit is machining the new side seals but if you get a second hand rotor then they can be re-used and avoid the tedious machining of new side seal but having said that its halve the amount of work as show below.

Rotary rebuild instructions

Thats the good part of building a single rotor in that it requires almost halve of parts of a rotary build so in this case it needs a rotor and rotor housing along with the required seal kits, depending on your rotor of choice if low comp for turbo or high comp for NA.
Best to buy a second hand rotary block which ususally sell cheap when a rotor housing is not usuable the use the good one. The rotor housings are the expensive units now to buy new but if you dont buy a complete short block, you can always buy good second hand ones anywhere from 150-300 dollars each depending on who and what they want for it.
I was going turbo so I could make around 220hp with with LPG as rotaries and LPG are matched perfectly but using a high comp rotor from the latest Renesis engine and Single 2 inch Su with reace extend porting can make around 140hp at 9000 rpm.

The R5 rx5 endplates Im supplying just need to be extend ported or used as is for turbo. Essentially the smaller 2 inlet port on the centre plate are deleted in this build meaning the 2 larger outer inlets are kept and supply more air stock copared to a twin rotor.
It all depends on your intended hp but turbo would cost about the same as extend porting it whether you wish to run it in LPG or a Single SU in drawthrough form or race extend form with single SU Y style manifold.
There is also the choice of going rx8 inlet ports which support 140hp NA as the endhousing front and rear plates have massive ports compared to the centre plate which is not used eg. low kms RX8 endhousing on ebay: rx8 front and matching rx8 rear plate

I can also supply a compact oil cooler and oil filter housing that usually feeds a twin rotor and will more than adequately cool a single with turbo or without. The gearboxes I recommend are the earlier light S1 to S3 smooth case as even some peeps have just started experiencing issues from their S1 boxes after many years spirited driving and some abuse from 200hp extend port 12a engines.
I could also be interested in a part swap for a turbo manifold you are making if that helps.

i have a couple of 12a's and a 13b sitting in the shed, have you driven a single rotor? are they alright to drive?

In 1996 I rode an NSU in Japan with full extend port 500cc single rotor and revved it to 16,000rpm and made around 138hp according to the engine dyno it was tuned on it is owned by one of my good friends who wouldnt sell me his 1967 cosmos that ended up full of rust due to been left outside along with all his other rare rotary treasures.

The RE5 suzuki had a short stroke for a rotor so was able to rev very high while the 13b has more stroke and still able to rev to 11,000rpm with ease compared to a twin rotor due to the e-shaft not suffering the flex of two rotors. There are counts of lawnmower racing revving them to 13,000rpm in single form.

I guess with boost 8-9000rpm should be enough kick in the pants

Do you have any spares for an early 13b rx4 rx5 etc. eg. rotor housing and rotor?

there's 2 12at, 1 13bt complete blocks and a n/a 13b in pieces and pretty sure i have a n/a 12a somewhere, dont think the 13b stuff is carby stuff tho. i thought the blocks were all the same apart from the rotors??

this would be awesome in my ute im really tempted to buy the setup because i originally wanted a rotor. im in 2 minds tho it wont have much torque but it doesn't need much to push along 600kg

Mr.Teves,

Thanks for the kind offer. I have too many engines on the go simultaeneously, will have to give this one a miss. Interesting little unit though.

No worries just putting it out there as Im also in same boat atm
There where 5 options I was tossing around with for in this build
Boost eliminates the torque issues otherwise RPM does too

1. PP using 2 1/4 inch bored out SU carburettor they work well.

2. EP using same carb

3. EP with Toyota supercharger off the front and SU or holley

4. As above but LPG

5. EP with T28BB LPG and intercooler

Can utilise existing engine mounts, T28BB is fine because a single 13b rotary
exhaust flow capacity is halve a four litre engine as in 13B.

- all rotors are the same just different weights and compressions
Peeps are now using the rx8 rotors due to high comp and lightweight
but not for high boost turbos though high comp low boost setups.
The earlier and rx8 have the water seals on the endplates while
the post 84 to last of the S6 rx7 are supposedly on the rotor housings
with water seals filled with devcon to use them on earlier plates.
The dowels have to match also but some peeps use the rotor housings
no 84 rotaries in you stash?

take note most of the parts where partly glad wrapped
and oiled so a little dusty in some places but all good.
Just forgot the engine dowels and studs but they are
also part of the deal and have other spare dowels etc.
