Hey all, new from Bathurst, ca18 powered 1000 race car

Hello fellow Datto lovers.
I'm from Bathurst NSW and as the title says i own a little blue 1000 2 door sedan Sport Sedan with a CA18 powerplant in it.
i noticed some of you have already seen it and were showing some interest in the old girl. Happy to answer any questions anyone has, basic info is CA18DE with 4ag throttle bodies mounted on my own manifold with trumpets and atmospheric injection all made in my shed by myself and two friends. I build my own engines, including making my own solid lifters for the CA in a lathe. car also runs 240/525/13 slicks, fibreglass guards, microtech injection, alloy fuel cell etc etc etc.

anyway i hope to chat with you all about your own cars soon.

  cheers
I speak for most in saying "So good for you to join us!!!" we love your work and I commented on youtube of your amazing driving feats.

I heard from Tighe and other places the Toyota lifters even Nissan V6 lifters will fit the ca18de is there a reason you made your own? eg. bigger cam lobe widths etc?? Is your head a four port or worked 8 port head? Also you running stock ca18 NCW crank or FCW crank from something else?

Ive tossed my NA build for a turbo ca18det build using the 4 port head and 88mm FCW crank but have to use 136.5mm rods modded from L14 and Kawasaki pistons from Ninja ZX14 for a little better longer rod stroke ratio than I would get with standard rods.

By the way you make us 1k officionados proud! and thank you

Hey thanks for the feedback on YouTube, I dont want to get a big head, i always say i dont care if i'm last in a race, as long as i'm having an epic stouch with second last i'll be happy !

as for my lifters, the only reason i make them is because i'm just the average joe, with less than the average budget, so i can't afford to buy most parts, instead i make them. i used the origional buckets, but i remove the hydraulic lifter from it, strip it apart and discard of all its innards, machine down the face that contacts the valves and make an "insert" from tool steel that fits very precisely into the cap and machine it to the exact length needed to obtain the valve clearances i need.

My cylinder head is a ported 8 port head, with tighe cams, i had to machine the head around the buckets to clear the cam lobes and did a lot of work opening up the combustion chamber around the outside of the valves where they were shadowed by the combustion chamber walls. unfortunately though the 8 port head has pathetic flow, but same old issue, i can't afford to be buying another cylinder head. Same thing went for the bottom end, i couldn't afford too much piston wise, so i bought stock pistons, cut the skirts down and balanced them myself, although i did fork out for h beam rods,  very much a necessity with 10,500 RPM.

Your engine sounds fantastic, i love the use of Kwaka pistons, i might have to steal that one in the future, this weekend i'll be hard at work pumping some new guards from my moulds and making a bonnet mould from fibreglass because i had an arguement with a concrete wall at mount panorama about a month ago, and i have the Australian hillclimb championship in two weekends time on the mountain !
nice! that sounds awesome love the way you build all your own stuff

Sounds fantastic in every way considering you have so much with the 8 port head and low compression for such an engine. For the future since you already have the rods you should consider a high compression honda piston from the B20Z which come in at 84mm with high comp available.

The Honda B20Z has similar wide valve angles to the ca18de head so minimal clearancing required. That would be your cheapest option for your setup.

I bought all my parts for very cheap from NZ all budget build. The only bit of trick gear which is available also cheap sometimes from failed projects is the crankshaft full counterweighed 88mm stroke crank but would ideally need to use the ca20e block to allow longer conrods for higher revvs to not destroy bore walls. However Im using the 24.5mm pistons from the Kwacka to suit 136.5mm conrods for 1.551 RSR while factory they are 1.591.

With ca20e block in NA using cheap H beam Mitsu 4g63 conrods at 150mm w/ 85mm honda B20z pistons its possible to get 1997cc, 1.705 RSR using 88mm stroker crank & with your top end should be interesting.
Aden do you think these rods would be good enough for high rpm?
215 USD on ebay CX racing rods

The ca20e block is 20mm taller & can be bored to 86.5mm w/ ease due to much thicker walls which were only discovered by some peeps recently previously saying the ca20e is a thin skinny block but in fact not.

Are you running the ca18det bottom end with squirters and mains brace or just the ca18de with mains brace? are you taking here up to 10,500rpm often  wow, I can only imagine if you had some proper money thrown into that engine how well youd go on the straights especially where that extra hp will make you even a worse nightmare for those 7 litre v8s.

hey there, new to the site, like the sound of your little weapon, was wondering if you sell your guards and bonnets? as im undecided as to the fate of my 67 4 door, cheers
Hey, I never thought of it before but i guess i could make some guards and sell them if you are interested in them ? i havent finished making a fibreglass mould of the bonnet yet, as i'm yet to see if i need to modify the shape to clear my new engine.
I believe if you made some guards, you may need to make a few sets. I for one would be keen!
any chance of detailed motor specs and some more pics?

Hey guys, sorry i have been slack and havent logged on for a while. I will need to upload some detailed engine bay pictures, in the next couple of months i will be stripping the engine for a freshen up before i sell it.
any pics yet of engine? especially sump area
