My ute! B20, Datsun 1000 Resto mod

Looking good mate.

I'd go for white if anything.
Thanks 1000Deluxe, the white is the one I was leaning towards. Just have to get down to a few car dealers and look what's around, but an off white metallic is what  I'm looking for and with an interior with seats trimmed like pic would look awesome. So off I go to look at some colours, probably come back with a totally different idea but will try and stay on track. One thing I know is I'm hanging to get it back on the road after 7 yrs of having no Datto!
Dont overlook POR15 Whitecoate, it is the hardest toughest paint Ive ever tried to damage with sharp car keys and was only able to make a thin hard to view slice with a sharp stanley knife. Metallics or Pearls can be added, no runs, no orange peel, used by Nasa and cheap compared to PPG or similar weaker paints. It can also be applied with quality rollers but Ive been adviced to even use the cheapest spray gun I could get because when it hardens or as it hardens it will block it then no amount of solvent will help. It really is crazy paint and usually the Black Coate is the one used for chassis but many use both on ducos.

That interior is mad, would look insane.

Hey all. Just a small update, got tail lights installed and came up nice. Also decided to change tailgate locks so got rid of handles and put in 2011 triton mechanisms. Now just need to work out a handle which will probably be commodore ute item as they are easy to fit. Now, the gauges! This is a dakota digital item and size is damn near spot on! So i was just putting it out there for 1000 community to give me some opinions. I would put a cover over the top to give it a factory type look as the dash already has a gauge pod on it, so I would try and match it. All I know is I don't want the factory one. Anyway only half the passenger side left to do and then interior and engine bay and then hopefully colour! Will try and get another update mix next week. Thanks all.
Looking the goods there very unique and love the lines!

Thanks d I'm happy with progress but like all projects I want it NOW! We had a blank canvas to work with on the back as  you would be aware, but did try and get it looking partially factory. We've really only been able to copy the back of members cars on this site so it will be a bit different to stock but I'm sure it will still be trick. Can't wait to get more pics to put up with tailgate on, should look real clean.

Hi all, got a few more pics of the progress to date. Coming up very nice and clean at the back. A few other mods have to be done to bulkhead as mine is stuffed! So hopefully it will be ready for paint in another two weeks all things going well. Will have more news next week in regards to a possible double purchase of 1000's...fingers crossed.
Cant wait to see this finished! Moving along well mate.

Can i ask why your going for a digital gauge over stock?

Look forward to hearing about your news..... Sounds to me like your've caught the bug.
I've had the bug for 25 yrs now but it was just on hold! The digital setup is for appearance only but if all going well this weekend there may be a coupe setup, but still really like the digital. I'm not a die hard traditionalist so not concerned about making the changes...besides I've got a wagon that will be more of a standard style, except for side windows being removed and filled in with panel!!!!

Hi all, here's a few more pics of progress. All the passenger side is pretty much complete with the roof also done. Just out view is the front gaurd which is good....now. Engine bay and interior are next (after the new bulkhead panel is put in) So hopefully in a few weeks it will be in colour and back in the garage to put on and in all my bits and pieces that I have been flat out polishing or reconditioning. The only bad thing is I'm going to have to take bits of my complete wagon that I don't have! A nessesary evil I guess. Will try And get some good photos of it prior to going in the booth. Or at least out of that corner it's been in for weeks.
just noticed the embossed diamond strengthening squares on this rear section that kiwi is magic!

Yeah tell me about it d. He is a great panel beater and all of the work done is of a high standard which means I will have to lift my game with the rest of it.

Hey all slow progress but this is how it looks so far. Went and made an offer on a coupe and a wagon a couple of weeks ago but still haven't heard as yet. Will be wrecking the wagon as they stacked a Subaru on its roof....WHY!!!! Coupe is not bad. Colour is going to be Toyota diamond white metallic, can't wait!

Hi all, slow going on the body at the moment but seeing mulotix doing his heater it motivated me to do mine. I had seen bee twenty' step by step in his diary and that helped by showing how to be thorough! Got the stickers off and only had to give it a good bit of surface prep and a re spray. Came up pretty good and now just have to get core checked and put back together. Have another that I will give the same treatment.
Looking good.

While you are doing your Heater... here is some more info on the early heater Resto I did earlier in my build.
The pics are just a mock up to illustrate the steps im describing.

Cut the head from an M5 Bolt and wrap the end tightly in tape intill it fits tightly inside the Knob.
Then insert the assembly into a drill and lightly wet sand using a fine wet/dry sand paper.
Then switch to some polish and a rag.

Only use light pressure when sanding and polishing to limit the tape from slipping within the Knob.

Give it all a good clean, then use some model paint in the letter void. (Don't worry if paint goes on the Knob)
Then before the paint drys take a pencil eraser tightly wraped in a clean rag and give it a quick wipe. (May take a few trys, and may need a very light wipe with some wax&grease remover or something similar)

You will end up with a brand new looking knob.
You can also do choke knobs, cigarette lighter knob like this.

Plus you can do your horn button, instrument panel, emblems ect with the eraser/clean-rag technique.
The eraser dosn't seem to reach into the shallow voids like fingers in a rag tend to do.

Thanks beetwenty all those little tips help. I've been lucky with the knobs on one of the heaters they were like new so don't have to touch them. The other knobs I have are stuffed so will have work something out for them. Ive just got to work out how to stick the 2 silver stickers back on.
Double sided tape should see them sticking again.
Run the tape past all the edges of the sticker to ensure you have 100% coverage, then cut off the excess with a set of clean, sharp scissors.

Or my little bro (Andrewzuku) sells repro sticker sets for $10 through his retrojdm site.

He was making some stickers for his celica and had to do a run in silver, so he made these up to use up the sheet.

They are printed on a metallic silver coloured sticker, so not 100% original, but they are pretty close.

Personally, i think because you have the originals in such good shape, i would use the originals.

I have a spare "V" if you need one

Cool I will try and find some super thin stuff.  I still have to get all the rubber grommets and the foam for the vent seals so I should be able to pick up some thin stuff in my travels.

Hi all. It's been a while but finally been primed and final coat
of hi fill so will hopefully be in colour before Good Friday. And hopefully back in my garage for Anzac Day long weekend, then the fun of putting all my reco bits and pieces back on. At least while it's been in the panel shop I've had time to polish, repair and re paint all the little one percenta's that I probably wouldn't have if it came back any earlier. Who would have thought that a 3 month paint and panel resto could take 14 months...haha!

Gday guys. Finally I'm one step closer to beautifying Aussie roads with another 1000! Colour is current mazda matallic red so I guess one of those twincam heads would be at home in the engine bay. Quite honestly I haven't stopped smiling since I went and looked  . Hopefully will have pics of body over weekend or early next week. Personally I can't wait to see the interior metalwork as it's one of my favourite things about these little beasts! More soon.
