Datsun 1000 project car, gift from a mate :)

Hi Guys,well got a suprising phone call from my mechanic friend the other night asking for me to come over to his place o measure up a car he has to stick graphics on, and to my surprise he bought me a DATTO! as we were talking about me building another fast street car a couple weeks prior.so this is her,Basically I think its a 1968? Datsun 1000 4 door Column shift auto body is extremely straight and has minimal to no rust, I think the previous owner attacked most of it as I can see a few repairs in the floor that are done quite well.has re trimmed white leather seats! all spares ar in the boot chrome strips, lights, interior bits and pieces tail shaft etc only things missing is engine and gearbox.so now this is the hard part! what to slap into the engine bay?I have spent hours trolling the interwebs on conversions that have been done and that are road legal here in QLD.my mechanic has an ex customers 260rwkw CA18det engine sitting here all complete but not legal to put into the datto unless we re stamp it to a CA16det?would love to keep the column shift auto too so I would like some opinions guys heres a list of engines I can get a hold of.12A bridgeport Rotary13B monsterport RotaryCA18DET that make BIG power SR16VEor I can go the A series route....A12 with Dual Webber carbsall info and suggestions wanted please Andrew AKA Fonz 
Start with the Diff (stronger LSD) Brakes & Suspension, then focus on what setup you want first. 
150rkw A15 is all anyone needs in a 1000 & is very possible to do with vitara cast pistons ($100),
stock prepped rods, good custom manifolding ($1200) good quality turbo and 900-1300 dollar ECU
with similar functions as a Motec. Also a good T50 conversion 5 speed etc.
Do not restamp anything or even consider this setup unless you do the first line, many go the other
way and then give up on 1000s due to the cost of this more important area. Get DBS prices first
and do them together all in one as diff pushes you to upgrade brakes and suspension. 
Just lightweight diff choice for a 1000 stops plenty on their tracks as nothing short of Winters
Quickchange or H165 top gear lsd on shortened H165 diff is available.

Most people including myself dreamt too much going for too much instead of aiming for less.
A very common mistake for unfinished projects, with dattos aim for less hp & achieve more.

Thanks for the info d! yeah i will difinately sort out the brakes,diff and suspension first! think my mechanic has already started making engine mounts for the CA18DET i cant find any write ups on installing different brakes up front?? can anyone point me in the right direction to a post with pics and a tutorial at all?

brakes and diff are sorted now, hilux diff is getting cut down tomorrow and au falcon brakes are this weekends project along with the gearbox and tail shaft all coming together quicker than i thought!
try not to skimp on pictures of how its done thats the most interesting part of the journey to the destination

Hey Fonz looking good. Do you have any pics of engine bay and tunnel mods that were done? Also would love to see your brake install when it happens! What sort of power are you looking to get out of it? The more datto's being built the better the roads will look!
I will be building an extensive library of pictures as i go along trans tunnel only needs a little "massaging" as it is a standard auto tunnel which is larger than the factory manual box.
 
well power all depends really, the engine made around 280rwkw's as it sits now with tomei head gasket,tomei 272 cams and gtr injectors also has built bottom end with wiesco pistons if i can remember right. all ran by a microtech ecu.

That is right d! i will be trying to document every detail there is with the datto, so keep posted its only just begun! aiming to have it all finished / street registered by brisbane jamboree in september
Mate that's a top effort..... Want to put mine back together, lol I've been stuffing around for years. With that kind of power your gonna need some serious rubber under it, always thought they would look good with 265's! Look forward to more.
haha yeah im looking for some nice rims and tyres at the moment so then we can setup the rear diff according to the rims i get. was just thinkning 16" falcon pursuits that have been widened to 8" in the rear

UPDATE! hilux LSD diff is cut down and mounted, got some 16" magna stockies, engine has been properly mounted, custom sump has been made to fit stock cross member, intercooler has been purchased (std fg xr6t)  front brakes have been pulled off the ba falcon front end.
 
next is adapt front brakes
get gearbox in
custom tailshaft
fit cooler + custom piping
install bosh 044 pump + surge tank + bigger fuel lines
sort out some sticky tyres
waiting for microtech to come back from re tune so we can wire it in
sort out under dash brake booster + clutch cylinders
fill with fluids and dyno
 
will be getting heaps of pics next time im down at the shed.

Hey Fonz can't wait to see pics mate, sounds like its gonna be a rocket! Keep up the good work. Are you going to do body and paint or you happy with how it is?
yes dix1000 its going to be quite scary! mechanic has informed me that i should buy extra underwear to place in my glove box hahaha he estimated it at runing an easy 10 second pass! so we will see what happens.
 
as for body and paint, the body is extremly straight! so no real work there, but i will be driving it as it sits for a while untill i paint it metallic burgandy
Nice! Just make sure you've got underwear for passenger as well!




hey guys, been a while since I posted pics so here are a couple from yesterday.fitted my xr6 intercooler and made sure it clears the grill and beaver panel. also got a new exhaust manifold as the other one sat too high.waiting my my shortened axels to come back from being re splined then diff will be going in.sort out my tailshaft and it will be able to start, run and drive Fonz
