1600 motor in a 1000 coupe Australia

Hey just trying to work out if it I put a datsun 1600 engine in my datsun 1000 coupe 1969. Will I be able to legally register it in N.S.W Australia? I can't find anything on it?

And has anyone done it before?

Thanks
I figure you are referring to an L16? well I have seen an L20b in a thouee but used a side mechanical waterpump from a boat, this was in a very rusty vb10 I found at some wreckers 25 years ago which also had a big bonnet scoop to clear the bonnet area. It can be done better using an L16 bottom end bored to 85mm with L18 crankshaft and Z18et head, that way you get legally an L18 capacity stamped L16 block and 2.5 inches lower head from the Z series and factory turbo everything and I suspect using the short 78mm stroke L series crank you can easily modify the oil pan to remove its extra depth and all in all make it as tall as an A15 engine providing you use an electric side or mechanical side waterpump.

This will be a pollution free engine if you use an early 1600 block from 1972 and pre that date and will go like the clappers with no need for cat converter and plenty of five speed box choices.

Dave stop subliminally changing my mind on engine choice i know your doing it on purpose! Hahaha.

Baaaah nah ive made my mind up already finally hopefully maybeline

Peisley, sure can it would be no problem, good thing about the l16 (datsun 1600) is that we're allowed 1.6 litres as maximum capacity with a turbo and 1.9ltrs naturally asp. Im sure as anything qld is same as nsw in that respect...

oh and cant beat that 1600 sound

its a pity though that we just fit into that capacity to weight ratio and the 1200s are in the next categorie allowing 2.0l engines etc... But oh well allows for creativity and challenge as you see in Dave's post!
Thanks for the reply's.

Thats heaps good coz I just bought one

I will post pictures of my car soon but yeah thanks for the help!
An L16 alone is equal in drive-ability as an A15,
I know of plenty of peeps who witneseed this in 1200 and sunnys and ended up going for bigger L series. You really need the L18 crank and bigger bores to make it more but the benefit is an engine that easily takes a 5 speed and "GO" parts are much cheaper than an A series.

Weight wise
A15 bottom and L16 bare block from rocker cover to head are virtually the same -/+ 5 to 8kg

A15 bare block with mains is 38kg
L16 as above is the same

cranks are the same

heads excluding cams L series is 3kg heavier

timing cover bits also 3kg heavier for L series

Boring out L16 from 83mm to 85mm is like taking out 4 x 2mm thick cast iron pipes out of block weight so theres 2-3kg there alone.

go the A series Mazda head deal....

(thats your tap in Pro D)
I would but love to see an L in a thouee in the 21st century, variety is the spice of life
