1000 ute engine conversion, sr20det or sr20de???

hey fello Datsun lovers....
ive got a 1968 1000 ute and was thinking about a engine conversion but want something different.
Has any one done a sr20det?

open to ideas, suggestions...
Shawn, B20 utes wiegh 615kg.
To register an sr20det into a car, the original factory wieght needs to exceed 800kg.
So nobody will engineer this combo in QLD.

As far as im aware...
Largest engine capacity measured in cc's for NA is 3 x kg viechle wieght, and 2.5 x for boost.
So the largest engines for registered use in your 1000 ute will be, NA 1845cc, Boost 1537.5cc
And if swaping to a rotary halve the maximum cc's listed above.

All Engine swaps above 1.2L will require a working demister, collapsable steering column, and brake upgrade.

Before buying an engine, check with the transport dept if the engine you want to use is ok for road use in your ute.

thanks for the reply mate, so a sr20de N/A  isnt legal either?
What engines would you suggest?
I understand theres alot of mods to be done, i just need to get details on all the legal requiements on engine conversions
Not legal either,  an SR20DE is also over capacity.

My personal preference is to sort out the car before chasing power. Steering, Suspension, Brakes.
Doing this will also give you some extra time to be sure about what you want before investing alot of cash into a major engine conversion.

Build your car for what you are actually going to use it for, and before you start...be sure it can be registered when you are done.

Wow I just realised that a ute can't have a 1.6 turbo.

Ca18de has been done before and proven succesful.

A mostly agreed/acceptable conversion for our 1000s is an a15 turbo, some people have seen up to 500hp with that combo. The reason for that is that the a15 is closest to the factory a10 weight so you won't be suffering with handling issues. And keeps a bit of originality.

Have a search but as for disc brake upgrades the front you can use Sigma GE wagon and pintara/bluebird series 3 on the rear. Maybe someone can chime in on whats involved for that. It's not much iirc.

Although you would never be able to turbo it legally (in a ute) and although everyone has basically cancelled this engine out by vote, the sr16ve engine is another option although most agree that the sr blocks being all mostly the same even with the 1.6, are too heavy in the front of our thou's being twice the weight of an a series. Size also being an issue and will need major sump and/or crossmember alteration for clearance.
And also the oil solenoids for the vvl and the distributor hanging out the back of the head will need to be relocated. Mazworx do a oil solenoid relocation plate and I have heard the you can use an sr20 20v cas in replacement of the dizzy.
Custom bellhousing adapter to an l series box has been done or something similar will be needed. Custom intake as fwd one is wrong way.

The addicting thing about this engine is the factory 195hp (or close to) and that's in NA form. And the vvl is basically 2 cam profiles in one engine giving great all round torque and drivability. Would be perfect for our 1000s when not considering weight issues.

I'm still looking into this engine option, and although I know everyone will say don't do it I still want to give it a go and atleast dumby fit it into another rusty thou just to see how close it all comes. And if I can pull off the fit and get it running, then i'll put it in my 1000 wagon see how it drives and go from there with upgrading suspension etc.

Just some food for thought!

What kind of power are you wanting?
Are you still on your Provisional licence? (your name says your possibly 18?)
Have you had any other cars?
Budget?
A15 would be a wonderful start with some carbs or if you get itchy hands try efi and some mild work. Would hammer in the weight of the 1k ute. And then you can decide from there if NA power is enough for you or you can go the turbo route without swapping engine.

Welcome!

Matt

Hey Matt thanks for the info
yea im 18, im a mechanic so the amount of work and budget dont matter. I work on heaps of different vehicles, and i love my Datsuns and Nissans.
Im just trying to figure out plans on the engine so i no the type of power and extra mods that need to be done to compensate for the extra power (eg. brakes and suspension, so on....)
id like a reasonable amount of power to start with and add to later on if i decide to.
i plan on leaving the body stock.
well as stock as possible by appearance, im just looking into what engines have been done and what engines are legal.  im after something different
Im currently building a KB10 with R31 brakes front and rear and running CA18DET.

The engineer I'm using has signed off on this setup before and has been a big help.

Like my engineer said and states clearly on the guide, it is only a "maximum recommended engine capacity" guide. It is not gospel.
Don't forget to factor in some body stiffening or a cage to keep it all together
ok that sounds awsome itd be good to see it finished.
Thats what i thought when i saw it, it states the recommended maximum engine capacity theres no legislation set in stone as such.... recommended being the key word.
i think ill stick to the sr and work towards finding an engineer
yea thats true mate cuz theres no full chassis just a mono frame so itll need strengthening
I put a G13B (suzuki) in my KB10. It made 129Kw at the treads with standard internals and a small turbo. I wouldn't recommend it unless you wanted to be different. If I had my time again I would go A series all the way and have alot more money in the bank.
GTi-t KB10
ok awsome mate, thats different havnt heard of that before, good to see someone doing something different
