Drivetrain issues

Hi all,
this is my first post on this forum, which is great, so much info.

Anyway, I've recently dropped an A14 into my 69 4 door 1000 sedan,
which has been sitting for about 12 months, I bolted it up to the stock 4 speed, using the a10 flywheel and clutch, (clutch was new when I bought the car and didn't do many km)

the problem I have now is that when I first went to drive away the rear brakes are locked on and and now I can't seem to take it out of gear, even without the engine running, I know the clutch is disengaging because I can't start it without it lurching forward,
I was thinking that with the rear brakes locked on, it's loaded up the tranny through the driveshaft and its stopping me from shifting.

has anyone experienced anything like this after doing an engine c/o?

cheers,
Newbs
ive had a locked gearbox, i jacked up the ass put it in first and had one guy on each wheel spinning them and just went through all the gears and it was all good

Yeah it's weird, it was shifting fine till went to move it, i had it parked in the shed of a rental but we'd moved up the road, so I had to vacate, I ended up getting the missus to tow me home, which is when I noticed the brakes locking up, probably something to do with the 400m long skid up the street.

At least I can say to my mate it's done longer skids than his turbo VZ ute :p
Check the length of the input shaft
Did you put the spacer plate back in?
The input shaft might be butted up into the crank
Spacer plate?? Neil, when I first put it in, the input shaft was too long, It wouldn't turn over because it had thrusted the crank, so I dropped the box and shortened the shaft by 10mm which allowed the engine to turn over easily.

Is it possible it needs to be shortened a bit more?
I had this happen to me once
But can't remember how much I actually had to shorten the shaft
And I fitted a spacer between box and engine

This sort of thing
Welcome, Newbs...

"Wendy's" got big cubes... nice car that one....

odd that it starts without moving though???
I'm no mechanical expert but I have an A12 with A14 internals and a 5 speed and noticed on mine that an A12 flywheel did not work (A14 flywheel about 5mm thicker) and also needed a longer bearing carrier to get my clutch to work. In saying this is it possible that the A10 box and flywheel do not mate properly to an A14?
I've put 12 and up flywheels in thou boxes before, you need to chamfer the corner off them, to make it fit in the box, and bearing carrier needs to have a sleve to fit the bigger bearing.. but can be done,
non of these sound like the issue if the motor runs without driving off???
Thanks Dundee, I thought it was pretty cool she was called wendy, who am I to argue with an old lady?

from what I've read, regarding flywheels and thrust bearings the engine plate is to accommodate for a thicker flywheel.

however, because I'm using the a10 flywheel, thrust bearing and clutch Assembly the only reason I can think of is either the flywheel mounting flange is too long, or the pilot bush bore is not as deep as on an A10 crank

Perhaps it's still thrusted against the input shaft but the lack of surface area is allowing the flywheel to turn around the shaft when the clutch is depressed
Or I've actually done some damage to the trans internals when I first put put the motor in, either way, I'll have to take the box out and strip it down to make sure
Agree with you Neil I remember years ago I had the same problem fixed it with the spacer and also shortened the shaft like you can't remember how much I shortened it by wow this was 20 odd years ago I always use later gearbox's now.
I have been a long time member of the 1200 club but found this site. As I have a coupe this is where I should be.
