new introduction, aussie in thailand

hi all,
greetings from thailand.
im from sydney, living in thailand for 4 years now,
i just came accross this b10 2 door in chiang mai thailand,
picked it up for 2 grand au and drove it 900 ks home,
1st datsun, always loved 1200 ute but never got to owning one,

its as good as it look in the picks or better, all new window rubber (maybe 5 years)
new int, and 1200 (not new)
im looking to tidy up a few things like brakes steering and get it to rev nice for now,

things are still pretty cheap here in thai so some stuff might be interesting,
done already,
1. reconditioned 4 drum breaks whith front pads $70
2. shaved ported and reconditioned head (valve seats etc), new speado cable, $100
tomorrow: rack and pinion, $120 lol... no idea what its comming off but will update,
nice to be here,
paul,

I like the rims and interesting tail lights.
There seems to be a fellow who has a few parts on eBay from Thailand I'll be getting a lot of parts from him ASAP

I'm guessing the air con is a welcome option up there!
When the "D" hits your eye, like a txt smiley guy...
thanks for responses,
i had no idea the bk lights were not right
but i guess i did think something with the back end was a bit odd,
i thought it may have been just the model / year 69,
so what to do,
im about to do full resto body and paint but
use most existing parts, so i would like to try to find the original tail lights,

original tails look way better right...opinions??
also front are different !!!

found a parts add page from bkk...
http://www.datsun-thailand.com/index.php?topic=9.0

labour is very cheap here to back there but i reckon new parts may be nearly on par
and not sure what they will have or can get,
will call the add and let know,
maybe compare price etc.

price on front and tail lights in aus anyone? availability?
sorry that im consumed with my car right now,
i will try to have some input by seeking out parts over here if i can help anyone you are welcome,
thanks paul.
Welcome Paul, Congrats on a beautiful ride its a good buy for a car that has experienced so many years in the humid and hot weather of Thailand. Can you please update us on the rack and pinion when you get a chance as its something alot of us guys are interested in. Where abouts in Thailand are you based? Weve been thinking of moving to Thailand with my wife who is from Japan but now there is a good reason to Datsuns!!!

thanks d,
based in buriram esaan,
just got back from my back yard machanic 9.00am and as i suspected he's
been to the wreckers and come back with a r&p,
it is off of a corolla ee80,
i didnt see it sedan hatch dont know, probly same anyway right..

so must be off same in the pic below, will get pics of the fit etc.
i did look around the forum last week about r&p and it can get pretty technical, turn ratiio etc.
this guy says he does heaps of older cars instead of messing with stearing boxes i guess,
we'll see how it goes will update.

if any 1 knows of any forseen problems with this ee80 R&P please let me know.
thanks, paul.

Sounds good to me as that corolla is same base as ae86. Therefore the R&P should be the same and one of the best drifters of all time, if not the best steerer ever!

hi all, again
i know im jumping on this post in short amount of time,
but my back yard machanic is now onto disk breaks,
i just mentioned it an next hes exited to tell me ...
yes yes yes no prob...
well get them from nissan something..... toyota something....
so we see in the morning our time, arvo your time,
very ipressive for these 2 pretty big customizations,
the bill for the disk break front end is $120 including parts and labour,
same as the R&P..
bring him back to australia with you lol he'll make a killing

it'll be good to see some photo's of the r&p setup and a review of how different it is to the original steering box

Wow well done! try to get him to use silvia disc brakes or even change to 1982-1987 vanetter front end
which is easier to source for balljoints. Siliva vented discs are easier but maybe some corolla stuff also
works but has to be the same stud pattern to work or easily re-drilled for datsun stud pattern.

Im sure he knows which one to use as they had so many datsuns and ways of upgrading that go beyond
countries like Australia where people dont bother or just upgrade their cars. Poorer economic countries
like Cuba for example can upgrade anything from almost anything for this reason.

yep i know what your saying,
also i think there was very little after sales service on minority models / brands,
so in these type countries the machanics learn to swap and change / what fits what...etc.

so the stearing is nearly finished, he cant find disk breaks which supprised him,
so will now wait til after songkran ( thai new year) 13 - 17,
taking the dato 900ks  south near phuket, oh and my girl friend lol forgot about her

hope she holds up ok... the girl friend that is.... the datsun will be fine

so the stearing... the colum comes out to a uni jont and the next rod goes of 45 degree
towards where it joins into the rack, im guessing this is normal?
is it that angle that can cause what is called bump stear? anyone..

will be finished in an hour or so, will inform of improvment etc.
paul.
Im surprised you plan on driving difficult roads to the south its quite a challenge this time of year specially been a Falang in a rare car
I remember been a Falang made me a great water bomb target on a previous trip and the laughing stock )

Ill be surprised if the steering if finished so quickly, its quite involved to fit onto the tie rods I would have though and also connect to the correct angle for the steering but hope he can as its a great option if successful.

I would suggest just cruising in some other way south for safety and surity, disc brakes will make a huge difference when done.

will be good to see how he finishs it

hi all,
r&p update,
job finished yesterday,
problems: discovered it had bump stear from the uni joint commin off the colum
to the rod that goes to the r&p,
fixed this 99% this morning,
problem was: where the colum comes out from the fire wall, he had the uni welded on
100mm out from the wall, this created much more angle un the uni hence bump stear....
solution cut colum, put uni hard against fire wall, extend rod that goes to rack,
this made a big difference in the angle,
drives like a gokart when on the move absolutely happy with this aspect,

some trade off...definately less turn ratio and less turn circle for some reason.
and doesnt return quite like it should,

if you were gona go through pretty tight witches hats at 15kph you would have your work cut out
aspecially changing lock,
but stears very light like power steer...

it still has original large steering wheel so will need a smaller steering wheel now to make switching locks much easier

over all:
very happy,
old stearing had alot of play and was very heavy now intant turn on the move and truns easy !
drive really well.
sweet any pics of the finished product? never seen something like this actually completed

First ever road R&P on a 1000 congrats! smaller steering wheel will make the difference for sure.
