OK Someone correct me..., Supercharger and Turbocharger

Ok so I am new to datsun 1000s and I have just purchased Davids little red wagon which is supposed to arrive on Monday! (so excited!)

I am also reasonably new to cars aswell, most of all my research has been here, online. I have a fair idea on the basics of how engines work and what parts do and all the internals etc etc etc I just lack hands on experience.

Anyways I thought I'd just prepare you with my limitations before I throw this possibly obvious-answered question out there...

Question is:     (ok it's not a question...)     I have heard people saying that turbocharging is somewhat more efficient over superchargers (Roots, Twin or Cent.) but in regards to where they source their energy to spin.... I've seen in discussions people say that 'Exhaust flow is wasted/free energy, that's why turbochargers use minimal energy to spin.'

And ofcourse the following, 'Superchargers are belt driven thus suck usable (more than turbo) energy from the engines rpm...'

Sorry if this makes no sense, best way I can explain it....

But with a turbo, I would have thought that the energy from the exhaust going through the exhaust turbine side of the turbo is still sucking energy from the engine as it's a restriction of flow... and technically the restriction of flow is equal to how much air is being compressed through the intake side?

So with a supercharger, the same restriction to the engine is how much energy it takes to compress the intake air, plus the little energy to actually free spin the 'turbine' things...?

Is this making sense?

What I am trying to ask is, isn't the only REAL difference the efficiency of design in both turbo and sc?

Correct me if this isn't even an issue and people don't say these things and that I read their reply wrong??????

Thanks guys,

Matt
Its really is a hard call as the turbo is supposed to be more efficient compared to a sc which uses up engine hp to run but in the end for example the supercharged VWs owners Ive spoken to and posted threads about their work on vw sites, swear economy increases and engine power has doubled in their 1600 and 1200 engines. So even though the SC robs the engine of hp, it still has benefits for economy to a point where you have a lead foot an not matter if its turbo or supercharged you will chew up more fuel as result of hp vs fuel requirements.
Yet anything boosted makes easy hp in the end but the turbo if its a small one is best for efficiency in a small engine so you get less lag and more usable hp to a point. Go too big and you have lag and little torque until it comes on. The SC has torque from idle so its a more responsive setup but probably in the end is 10-15% less efficient than a small turbo.
Like I said its a hard call and all depends what you are chasing, what pulleys manifolding and fueling you use but for torque and response the sc is hard to beat up to 180hp while the turbo will be able to make more hp from mid to upper hp if it can flow more than the supercharger. Whatever you choose keep it simple and small then you get max efficiency.

Ive decided on a sleeved A10 for one of my other 1Ks and should be happy with 1277cc humming away in a 650kg car.
If I boost it I will use a supercharger as it can be unbolted easy enough and run the inlet side if I have to due to the Fuzz.
