The mirrors on the fenders seem to be a dealer fitted thing.

They seem to be mounted wherever they wanted.
Ive seem some right down the front, some about 2/3 way, some half way, some only on the passenger side, some only on the drivers side, some not at all.

You could try to argue that the car came with them and so should be allowed to have them, but they were banned from cars for a reason.
They may demand that they be spring loaded or something, but i'm not from NSW some don't take my word for it.
reason for banning?

My mechanic told me they got banned because you can't adjust them from inside the car but he then said because the Datto come standard with them I could run them on my ute as long as there original ones. So far I've never had a problem with police

I'm pretty sure if they were factory fitted then you are allowed to have them, just like no seat belts in the rear of coupes and sedans. I'm not sure if they were dealer fitted as Reuby says, that's seems like a grey area to me.
The reason they were banned would be incase you hit a pedestrian. You would more likely hit them around that area. Just like fishing rod holders on 4x4's, you can't have any protrusions.

I could well be wrong on the dealer fitted thing.
I know that seatbelt were fitted by dealers if you ordered them.

The reason I say that is the complete inconsistency how they are fitted.
there just isn't any rhyme or reason that I cam tell.

And yes the reason they were banned is to do with pedestrian strikes. Same reason hood ornaments ate all now spring loaded.
