My B20 Ute resto

hi guys i present to you my 1000 ute i traded for my old commodore ute that had an rb30 turbo engine. i saw this and it stood out from the crowd, i owned 2 1200's and wasn't real keen on another wanted something that wasn't 'main stream' so to speak and thought this would make a great daily driver.

So far i haven't really done much except lower it and put some wheels on, pretty well just been collecting parts and what not to make it as original as possible with the exception of a couple mods

When i first got it-

Was heading to work one day and the bonnet flew up and moulded itself to the roof lol. i got a bit dis-heartened after this because i soon realised how hard it was to source parts so i just put it in the shed

Finally got some enthusiam after looking at some jdm styled cars, so started to search for bonnets and now have 3, bought some SSR mk2's 13x8 -13 offset, got the leafs reset in the rear and chopped the leaf rests in the front and then ran into another snag. In the rear the shocks weren't short enough so have had to source out some short ass shocks which i eventually found and found new ones for the front too. I haven't had time to fit the shocks but am assuming i will have to do some modding of some sort also will most likely re-valve the shocks too, also have a coilover setup for the front which i'd like to see how it fits up and this is where im up too

i've been collecting parts for the motor and body, mainly hard to get things and have nearly got everything to complete the body like lights, blinkers etc... also for the last few weeks i've been trying to decide what drivetrain to run and tossing up the costs. met with my engineer today and my plans are to stick a 12a bridge port in it, yes it's getting rotorised lol. so after i finish collecting the parts/car i've commited to buying i will be organising getting that started and let you guy's know how i progress, also once i get started properly i will post up more detailed pics/info of what i've done i actually haven't tackled anything out of the norm yet so yea

thanks for taking the time to read and if you guys have any q's feel free to ask

cheers leith

Good to see you starting a Project Diary Leith.
You will enjoy looking back through this in the future.
I love the wheels, Andrewzuku will be jealous.
1967 Datsun B10 2 Door.
Those wheels give it a totally magical stance - one of my favorite 1000s by far

and I only wished I had a ute now or when I was a young bugger, I would have had

any girl melt with "thats so cute", then look for a cheap Motel for the full spread.

Hell yes I'm jelous! Those are at the top of my "want them" wheels list.
lol d, wish i got into datsuns a bit earlier but only ever owned a datsun since i've been with the current missus

Yea wheels are nice im looking into getting 2 wheels with more positive offset for the front

Can anyone tell me the chassis rail width in the front? been looking everywhere and can't find it and haven't got mine close to measure

Just measured...

Insided to inside the chassis rails is 557mm (front of engine bay) or 550mm at the firewall.

Measuring from under the car, outside to outside the two faces (facing the wheels) are 693mm at the front, and 666mm at the firewall end measured from the firewall side of the idler arm and steering box.
thanks for that andrew!

This car has some seriously good stance, a little more tuck on the front like you said though. Maybe flares?
yea i've got spacers on the top control and there like 1inch which i dont really like, i'm looking into flares and a front lip but i dunno im still not 100% sure what i wanna do. im gonna pump the guards and see how it looks after that then go from there

Hi mate, I saw your running r31 brakes on the front, I just bought a set for my 1000 ute that I just purchased. Are you running standard hubs or are they 120y? Cheers mate
honestly couldn't tell you, i got the car with the brakes already setup

No problems mate, I'll keep researching. Cheers
well got a new shell last weekend thanks to beetwenty hope to get working on it soon

i've been working on a custom upper control arm to adjust camber, this is a similar setup i'd like to use

they use these on american hot rods and muscle cars. if i use this setup i have a couple issues to sort out, the cross shaft bolt space is 5" apart not 3" like the thousand so will have to make a custom bracket but then the cross shaft might be to long. the other problem is if the gm ball joints are compatible, neither of these are a huge deal i should be able to fab up a custom cross shaft and ball joint plate so i can at least use the rest of there setup

Sounds awesome mate, the custom upper control arms are a great idea, I looked at the spacers on the control arms like you said but the adjustable control arms would be money well spent.
The biggest issues with the thouee stuff is that things like balljoints are
very hard to source, Id be interested in upper and lower ones to be use
with a light and commonly found upright but most of them are too heavy
or too big for the thouee. The only one I can think of is the later vanette
which has very good discs and same suspension.
If you are going this far its worth upgrading the brakes with the vanette
@ worst toyota liteace, townace, mistu l300 or other similar F suspension.

if i was building a race car i would have no drama putting in a fully adjustable front end with custom uprights, since this is for a street car mainly just looking for easier camber adjustment. hopefully i'll get some time this week to go see a friend who's in the know about making me some thousand spec cross shafts but to suit the bushings and adjustable arms in the photo

ok guys ordered the adjustable arms and bushs off the control arm in the picture and hoping just maybe the bushings might go straight on to the 1000 cross arm but highly doubt it

on another front the engineer told me my brake setup is not good enough on paper said i have to find a disk setup from a car with similar weight. so i've been researching the 120y seems to be the easiest way to go anyone got any other suggestions

So what did the engineer say, that the discs arent big enough? Cause you have already 120y disc buy the look of the photo in the disc brake section, cause of the bolt on discs/hub. My brakes are r31 disc and calipers on the standard hubs and by the look of it the discs are a bit bigger but the clapping force of the caliper would be the same cause of the same size piston. I'm thinking of running a remote boosted to give me better feel but over all I think my brakes are too big for the size of my ute ha ha.
yea i thought i had r31 calipers, when i saw your calipers there not the same but pretty sure there not 120y calipers either but looks like a 120y hub?? im confused lol

pretty well he told me i need complete disk brake conversion from a car with similar weight, said the ratio between the front disk and rear drum would be wrong and theres a chance the rears would lock up using the wrong master cylinder??
