Dat1000 Ute b20 restoration, 1000 Ute restoration

Hi everyone new to this website and just wanting some tips for my restoration
Welcome to the group.
My biggest piece of advice is to be prepared to exersise PATIENCE anytime something becomes hard.

Without knowing which sort of restoration advice you are chasing ill give my 2c for 1000's and some general tips for dissasembly.

Don't break or get rid of anything as it is all potentially hard to source for a 1000,
In many cases the part that you think isn't worth using or saving will be the only part available to you for a long time.

On the ute, Taillights are quite hard to source, some steering parts also (cross-link, control-arm bushings)

Overall 1000's are a fairly simple car and a surprising amount of the car can be made from scratch, so if you are prepared to put in the time then making your own stuff is a real option to consider. (Door cards, etc)

Penetrating fluid, Vice grips, impact screwdriver (hit it with a hammer type), 6 point socket set, good to very good quality screwdriver set and a quality tap and die set will go a long way to make undoing 50 year old bolts and screws succesful.

If anything binds up that is directly threaded into the car dont attempt to solve things by adding more force.
Instead, use more oil/peneteating fluid etc and GENTLY tighten/loosen the stuck bolt, even if it takes alot of micro steps.

For screws with chewed up heads tapping a screwdriver into the head of the screw while appling undoing torque can sometimes get them out also.

Looking foward to seeing another 1000 fixed up.

Thanks, Ash.

the majority of the car was with it when I purchased it.

I will be doing a full restoration on the datto with some extensive metal work needed

I'm having trouble finding an image of the original colour.

Josh.
Hi Dat1000
What is your original colour?
Id add to Ash's comments regarding screwdrivers. You may want to consider purchasing a set of JIS (Japanese Industry Standard) screwdrivers (from ebay etc). You wont find these at your local Bunnings store. While there are a few Phillips head screws used on the Datsun, the majority of them are in fact JIS. There is a slight difference to the head pattern and using the JIS screwdrivers on old screws sometimes makes a bit of a difference.
Note that JIS screws can "usually" be identified by a small dot on the head.
Hope this helps.
Aah yes, JIS.

I think James May has some good info regarding screw drivers on one of his "Reassembler" videos.

The original colour is like a dark green/dark blue and the bolt on the car have been changed and do not all match with the car originally. I would really like to find out the colour but I don’t know if I’d use it because it’s so dark
There is a Dark green colour option for the Datsun 1000 in a couple of my old sales brochures.
From the Brochures that I have here, it looks quite dark.

Nissan Lists the colour as 703.

In an old 1959-75 Dupont colour Chart that I also have here,  Datsun 703 is Listed as....

703, Sunny Side Green (1969-71)
Sales Number, 90936.

Also, the colour looks alot darker in the genuine brochure than it does on a computer screen.
And the few colours that I have as paint chips and brochures, there is variancebetween matching codes.
So for a true colour it might pay to visit your local paint supplier and see if  they have any colour chips as samples.

I had a coupe with that color, its more like a dark khaki and suits
a shiny black interior, chome and black watabe wheels with chrome lips.
Well thats what I had and last of my coupes was sold to a guy in sydney
called Benny which was originally that color but previous resto painted it
using a Holden Racing Green like a dark emerald green and looked very good as well.
I personally like the light blue 567, interior of my 2door sedan was that color inside out.

Whoever owned it before me removed the bucket seats and installed a rear 1000 2 door sedan but I found left over red material under the dash so I think it was a dark green on red interior.

the colour could also be a dark blue is that is the colour in the bed

645 with red interior could have been the combo as in the chart
both body colors and red interior sound like a great retro choice!
Unless coupe charts are different? I did have a white coupe with red interior once
but previously only had white coupes with black interiors.

This is what it looked like after we got it home and washed it
Looks like early headlight surrounds
And late guard repeaters.... on backwards
If anybody could help me figure out the year of the car that would be appreciated

also what do you use for the parcel shelf if it’s no good

thanks
Some 1000's have the build date on the type plate.

Otherwise a Chassis number could also help to narrow it down.
B20 Chassis No.
B20-014367 to B20-040000 (From Dec-1967 to Sep-1968)
B20-040001 (From Oct-1968)
B20-061001 (From July-69)

LB20-000001 to LB20-001000 (From Dec-1967 to Sep-1968)
LB20-001001 (From Oct-1968)
LB20-003001 (From July-1969)

I am unsure what you mean by a parcel shelf in your ute.
Are you referring to your dash top?

The parcel shelf is the thing under the glove box

You will most likley need to make something from another car fit into the space.

I did make a shelf from an RN40 Hilux fit into my 1000 years ago.

Wasn't perfect, but it did go in.

Id guess that other models of cars could also be modified to fit.

better than cardboard original flimsy one Ash, great solution! looks better too

Im thinking ute probably had replacement panel where the blue is but the
engine bay is white and usually never repainted unless full resto with engine out

what would be the best way to remove the front bumper as I can't get any tools into the tight space

and the bolts on the car are all different and don't match

from what I have found in the car I believe it was a dark blue ute with red interior
