A15 engine swap, advice would be nice!

Hey everyone!
I was wondering if anyone has done an A15 conversion to their 1000?
i will be doing one in the next few months and would really appreciate any advice or tips you would be willing to share
thanks guys!
M
sorry I cant give you any advice but I used to own one that had an A15 installed by the previous owner. I was only speaking to him yesterday because I've just bought an L16 & 5 speed to go into my ute.
I am about to go down the A15 turbo path in mine, has a A12 at present. Will keep you posted as I learn more
It supposedly all goes straight in with a couple of modified engine mounts but after going back to A12 I have had issues with the rear (gearbox) mount and then tail shaft. Also in the other direction fan clearance may be an issue. Just drop it in and start measuring, you can use some 5-6mm steel plate to offset the engine mounts but make those other things I mentioned
line up
A15 is only a good thing in a K with either a 3.545 or 5 speed and 3.9

Hi Everyone,

If you have pictures handy of engine mounts you have made up for an A15 on standard, unmodified cross member, can you please share? I am looking for options and designs for offset mounts from the block, not looking at a plate on rubber mount option.

Also, would be keen to see how far back the engine can sit. Gearbox is 2T and I don't have a tailshaft made up yet so placement is flexible.

Thanks
The only simple way is a plate to the original mounts to offset the bolt pattern
if you are after something more fancy, no-one has done it to the original ears
most people go the simple plate or remove ears and make/mod new ones

Thank you for the info.
For easy flat plate engine mount relocation...I have an example of someone elses early-Late conversion which is a flat plate that bolts to the AC mounting points and engine mounting points (exhaust side), then an early engine bracket bolts to the adapter plate.

So same idea as what D has suggested, just done on the engine block side instead of on the crossmember side.

I think It has a cleaner look, but on the down side it does remove AC mounting as an option.

Pics of what I am talking about.

Never saw it mounted, was just on an A14 that I bought a few years ago.

The other side isnt worth showing, It looks like the previous owner wanted to modify the bracket... but got confused and then added a long adapter plate to fix the now 70mm offset (35mm early to late difference and then an additional 35mm because bracket goes the wrong way)

Thank you, that is the sort of thing I am looking at doing. I should get a chance in the next 2 weeks to bolt up the gearbox and make the cross member, once its all done I will post a couple of pictures of the engine mounts.
Drivers side will still be as D suggested.

If you can, I would suggest rounding off the corners on your plate.
The asthetics of it will far exceed the effort .

Yes was going to suggest that you must round off the corners of anything!
we are OCD and we just dont understand how people dont spend another
minute just grinding and smoothing ends and making them rounded.
Sharp corners give me the irrits!!!!!

After travelling through Spain and Santorini Im always angered by modern
concetre western building also all sharp corners no soul totally clueless.
Round things off yar butchers!!! Now thats CDO (in alphabetical order)

If your talking CDO...

I like to use a washer as a guide.
If I grind too much, the washer adds thickness to slow any error.

Then break the edge with a file to add the last little bit of detail.

Dosn't take long. (I made this while waiting for the kettle to boil for my morning coffee)

Well worth the extra few mins.

Good luck with the swap.

Thank you for the tips!
I also use a washer but to mark the area with a perm marker to not risk ruining a washer

Wondering if anyone can help with a measurement for the gearbox placement?

I am installing the celica 5 speed and trying to get the output shaft at the right height to not effect the pinion angles. Unfortunately I didnt take the measurements before removing the box.

What I am after is the distance between the top of the tunnel and the top of the output shaft.

Any help would be great.

I get approx 105mm from top of tunnel to centre of output shaft.

Thinking centreline as a height measurement will eliminate any differences between output shaft/driveshaft diameters between the original datsun parts and the celica conversion parts.

Hope this is what you are after.

Thanks Ash, very helpful and exactly what I was after.

Update on the engine mounts: I spent some time fabricating some engine mounts for the a15 using cortina engine rubbers and decided on using the mount on the drivers side as a fuel pump block off.  I still need to clean them up a bit, just hit them with some primer until I can get back to the job.
