Thanks D

Ash has a few other goodies kicking about. The next thing I'll be scanning is the 3N71A Automatic Transmission Service Manual.

If anyone out there has a service manual for the Manual Transmission, I'd love to borrow it to scan.
Excuse my ignorance as Ive never owned an early auto but is there a chance the first autos happened to be Borg Warner Type 35 by any chance?

I just skimmed through the manual and there's no mention of Borg Warner in that.

To quote BensDR30 on ozdat.com...

Quote:

"FYI, there are only 2 types of 3-speed transmissions used in Datsuns:
Borg Warner Model 35
Jatco 3N71B (the 3N71A was only used for a brief period and only in other markets)"
No 1000 ever had a BW auto
I believe thats abit of a furfy and no truth in it

Heard the rumour... but never seen any proof
I worked for a trans parts wholesaler up until recently and they nor any of the builders I spoke to have heard of it either
Was the BW35 in any A-series Datsun at all, maybe the later Aussie built 120's? I'd be surprised if they weren't, seeing as just about every other AUS built auto car had them, i.e. Valiant and Ford. They're bulletproof behind a 4 pot standard. Plus, they'd be a dime a dozen, so a fit would be way more economical than a 3N71A.

Yes they were in aussie built cars
180B etc
Parts are getting harder to come by as most cars with that box are almost extinct... lol
Still soft parts available but not many hard parts
True that Neil: My 1st car was a TE Cortina (pretty mch extinct, thank GOD!) which had a BW35 and I blew that tranny to oblivion (where's Unfamilia for that blatant double entendre?! ).  On the flipside though, I also had a GD Galant with one in it. Actually apart from the motor, I swear the rest of the drive train was straight from a Centura, because it was bullet proof behind that Saturn engine.  I hurled all kinds of abuse at that thing, such as neutral drops @ 50km/h and prolonged statics where the engine would never rev above about 1500rpm and it never even developed a slip! That little Bullant was the best $300 I ever spent.

But back to the autos...
Apart from torque convertors, were there any internal differences (i.e. gear ratios) to the BW35's used behind 4-bangers and the ones behind 6pots Neil?  Also, were the bell housings interchangeable or were they one piece like the Torqueflite?
From memory (which I admit is almost lost in a haze of smoke... ) Ford used them in the XF Falcons and possibly even the Series 1 EA's, before Ford released the 4spd electronic, yes yes??  I'm wondering if places like Clifford's or Balcatta Auto Transmisions would still have recond stock available?

I think your out of the loop mate.. Cliffords has been closed for ages...I think Balcatta too

If you want old stuff its still about... just not sure why you would
Bob Flood is still good for old crap
Really? Shit, been a white collar in the auto industry too long!

I'm just thinking out loud Neil, in case I decide to convert my 4dr back to auto. I was thinking if the bw35 did ever come out fitted to the back of an a-series, it may be a cheaper alternative.

Im still considering an auto for my A13 build but had to source a 3.5 ring and pinion to make sure the revvs are decent with the extra 7mm stroke and 300cc extra. Just sourced an auto from a 120y seems rebuilt and have to say there is a bit involved in the brackets to clear in a non auto 1000. Maybe the 1000 auto had different mechanisms? I will never know as most peeps convert them to manual trying to make it faster but auto should be good for cruising and some zip if you have an a12 or big bore a12.

Don't forget you can search the Datsun Identification in the Reference Material to show all Australian Datto's that came with a particular transmission.

Eg:

Just click "Show Search Options" under "Keywords" on the bottom-left of the page.
OK so here it is not the 1000 but the 1200 with an A12! or the L14? we need to solve this puzzle
as the type 35 is a much smaller and lighter box compared to the jatco 71 series, Ive had both sitting
side by side and the type 35 maybe not as strong but as Alan said plenty for our needs and packaging.

Thanks Andrew & Dave.

Like I said, I'm only thinking out loud.  Probably wouldn't be easy doing the conversion on a Thou' and keeping the collumn shift anyway.

On another angle, most Powerglides were column shift! Too heavy I know, but mmmm.... 2 speed!!
