Well if that covers the custom fabrication of the replacement parts then I guess it's okay but sounds like fairly broad quote conditions.

Why not grab another one that still works? $550 is a fair bit hey.

I just ordered a datsun 1200 parts book, so it should arrive in a week or so.
If 1200's and 1000 steering boxes share any part numbers I will let you know.
I'll just look up the steering box in the 1000 and 1200 parts books to see what bits are the same.
I think they share some gaskets and shims, I'll confirm this once I get the book.

For what its worth, I have discovered most conventional Pitman arm pullers (33mm gap) are TOO BIG for the teeny 1k PA.

thats some real good info, i wonder what actually needs replacing? 

my main problem is i dont know what to look for, i understand all the spacing/gaps just wouldn't be sure which parts specifically need to be done.

im also half thinking can you  just replace the steering box/shaft, idle arm and tie rod ends with 1200 stuff? i remember when we were talkin the other weekend ash that the you were pretty confident the 1200 idler arm would line up. just unsure if the indicator stalk, column surround and dash mounts are compatible/lineup

I decided to take a pic of the 1000 idler arm and another of the 1200 idler arm from the same angle to see how close they are.

Turns out they are the same.
I used skinny bolts that were smaller than the holes in the chassis so there was a few mm of play with when mounting.
But the pic still demonstrates what im getting at.



The 1200 idler arm in the pic is 555 brand Part number CSX1135.

I also think the 1200 part will have less flex than the 1000 part because everything is kept much closer to the mounting points on the chassis.

I think there is a good chance the whole steering box/column set up from a 1200 would work.
The exploded diagram in the two parts books are identical.
I think the 1200 only had an extra spacer at the steering wheel end.
The only thing I could see as being a potential problem would be the overall length of the steering column. (You don't want even less room in the 1000)
and maybe the diamater of the steering column if it happened to be different, but even then it wouldn't be hard to mount.
I would say you could use the whole indicator set up and even get a steering lock/ignition in the 1k.


I have no idea if it would actualy fit..
Maybe you should see if anyone on 1200.com has a spare in the shed they could measure.
or maybe even donate.

If it works you would have a collapsable steering column in your 1000.
That would be better for your own safety and would have to make any engine swaps that little bit easier to get your engineers certificate.

never really looked at a rack and pinion setup would be nice,  was trying to keep it simple and would also be easier to get parts i assume.

i'll try get measurements if it's to much longer im not real interested i like the space the way it is

thats what i was thinking ash would be good to be a bit safer lol
