what oil to use?

How do you work out what oil to use for an engine?
There really isn't a formula to work it out. It all depends on the motor. Is it std and worn std and good. Modified. Hi performance . If you give a description of the motor and expected use we can make suggestions.

But a good general purpose oil for an a-series would have to be a 20w50 mineral based of any brand. If its a bit tired you can thicken it up and run a 20w60 mineral oil.

Its a a-series. Its tough and not going to care much about what brand just that it has oil.
Ok thanks well I am acctually putting a datsun 1600 engine in my 1000. Its is re manufactured with twin carbys and extractors. What oil would that need? All brand new parts for the engine. Wont be driven to hard though im a slow driver.
And would you mind explaining to me what the numbers mean for the oil? Im guessing the second number is a thickness but could be wrong
I havent had much to do with the L series of motors, but it sounds to me like a 20w50 will be more than fine.

As for an explaination of what the numbers mean, its a measurement of viscosity at differernt temps.

this article that I just searched for is a good start.
Thanks heaps! Will have a read
Would love to see how you fit the L series in, sounds like a perfect upgrade
especially in the future when you have an L18 crank, L16 rods and Z20e pistons
1800+ cc etc. Do you have a pic yet of it in the bay?

Make sure you use mineral oil running her in and follow the method below

running in method highlighted by Mototune and as done by Factory sportsbike engineers
