ca18 in diff options,

hi guys been a while havnt been on, got ca18 in, some issues with (mainly limited machanics where i am...  will post
pics and my issues
but diff issues now, so diff is winding so pulled it out to redu all bearing at machine shop... and brakes are in poor condition,
just thinking of rear disc options while im at it.... was looking at r31 disks here: http://datsun1200.com/modules/myalbum/photo.php?lid=11019

or even full rear conversion r31? an help appretiated yas know im mechanically and tech challinged here lol but going it alone from here on, hope i'll get there with help from you guys, i have got a good machine shop and spares / but may be limited spares,

i noticed fonz used a hilux set up here: http://www.datsun1000.com/TopicView.asp?TopicID=761

cheers paul.
btw,
im thinking its overkill to change the whole diff rear end im sure the machine shop will sort out the bearing wind problem. but appretiate any optinions,
i imagine if shop pops off the bearing i bring back the axle and hub grab a tape measure and head down the wreckers for some suitable rear discs? lol

i do have a suspension guy who may help near by he did the front discs no fuss direct transfer conversion. off a nissan god knows what, he couldnt explain. he may offer limited help, he didnt help with the diff problem.
so to simplify this, (long post lol)

do r31 rear disks, bolt strait on to my b10? as in here: http://datsun1200.com/modules/myalbum/photo.php?lid=11018

cheers.
B10 diff will never be strong enough for a CA if your going to actually drive it

Look at other options

No the R31 brakes are not a direct bolt up and the stock axles will float abit anyway I'm guessing... till they break
thank for the input neil,
by the post fron 1200.com it looks like the rotors fit straight on,
i dont know what you mean by stock axles will float abit,

im just looking to get it back on the road, ive had trouble here with the quality of work done,
my missus wonts to burn it...
so im doing most myself now, i will drive it drive it normal and push it sometimes but its not a race car for me.

if i cant find the r31's i will look for a suitable front drive rear breaks and do what mods are needed i guess,

cheers.
Personally I would just leave the std diff alone and get something with discs and get it shortened, hilux diffs are a good option. At least that way you can get almost any ratio and no heartache when you blow the stock diff with a custom disc setup!
Are you looking at Jap built R31 or Aus built, cos I have a feeling (could be wrong) that the Aus R31 diff was a Borg Warner: I guess is as RARHS* up yonder in Thailand.
I think the Jap R31's diff may be a H190, also found (?) in the D21 Navara/Pathfinder/Terrano which I reckon are in abundance up there, yes? If so and you look into it, search for a 4WD diff; they're factory LSD goodness.

hi dix1000,
yep probly should have gone hilux diff but bigger job so wasnt sure,
recoed the standard diff and wheel bearings now,

they put new wheel bearings on and i had them leave off the drum brake back plate,

so lookin for some disk brakes it is!
hi dats, good point didnt consider it may be an aussie diff in those cases,

i did inquire on r31 ya never know what they may have through the jap parts and engine imports in bkk i guess, the feedback is they are a bit rare and a bit pricey...

so are ya saying consider the full diff rear end of D21 Navara/Pathfinder/Terrano?
need to shorten etc?

cheers.
Yes and yes, but you would have to shorten if you did a full R31 conversion as well. Come to think of it, just about every other diff would have to be shortened to fit under our skinny little Thou's. Long story short, the standard diffs don't like a lot of extra torque (Ihave an A15 in my Wag and worry about that popping my diff!), so be prepared for another big job to strengthen your rear end.

with the disc brake conversion, I trust you've at least converted to dual system hydraulics i.e. twin pot master cylinder?

in Thailand best go for the h190 on navara, vanette a15 models, d21 utes etc
later u can fit an LSD I can source for you but pls go drum brakes, as disc rear
is quite a lot of work while drums are standard and better for handbrakes.
disc are better for racing, but overkill for the street on a thouee.

another choice is irs rear end using early mx5 which r cheap for lsds
and since labour is cheap there you can tub it too.
mx5 rear ends r cheap and plenty fullplenty full

thanks for the info guys, dats, havnt considered hydraulics upgrade,
and d, thanks also i'll keep the info for the future possible full rear conversion,

for now im staying with the standard as i have recoed the center and wheel bearings are on with no drums,

we are gonna look at rear disc conversion from front wheel drive car, find suitable rotors with calipers and make brackets i guess.

question, would it be easier to use other suitable drumbs at this point? ? im just done with buying original parts where we
can have less headaches if they need doing in the future etc,

so to recap, for now ive got a good standard diff with no breaks where to go from here?

cheers.
use 120y or later sunny rear drum brakes
edit:
even better bluebird 910 and many the same size drums
for example 260z use the same drums but finned alloy
all parts interchange between bluebird, 910, 810, 280c
and other vans and trucks all the same rear drums sizes.
