Upcoming FS: Datsun 1000 Turbo Manifolds [PNG to AUS], Taking Orders Now - $400.00

Good Evening fellow members!
 
I've been real busy with work and four project Datsuns but I am coming to the stage of building the turbo motor for my 1000 (GT15).
 
As with most projects the funding is always a little thin spread, I am making turbo manifolds for the 1000 so that I can raise some cash for my projetcs. The fabrication will be done through a third party so you must consider this in my pricing (AUD$400.00 each unit). I will be inspecting each manifold making sure they are of good quality. They will also be sand blasted and epoxy painted.

For those interested I am looking at collecting payment for these on October 29th. Price may vary by 5% or so.

would need a pic installed,space for carby in front? to clear stock inlet manifold etc..
for what turbo?
I'd rather not have paint as i would get ceramic coated,
 
and depending on these things Chris, I can think of at the very least, 3 in WA......
Top Gear had perhaps the nicest looking manifold to fit a 1000
looked very effective too but needs to clear inlet manifold.

Sorry no news, had a few minor hiccups. The objective is to use the factory inlet manifold, if I create one that requires a custom inlet then all of a sudden I will be making a custom inlet to suit the turbo manifold- which wasn't my agenda (not in a multiple unit production anyway) but still a possibility.
 
There are two, more efficient designs and then another two that aren't as effective.
 
I'm not familiar with the term 'tuned length' but I will be measuring the containe volume of the runners to get accurate lengths - with regard to optimum runner lengths with reference to the heat expansion of the gases etc I fear I am constrained moreso by dimensional restrictions rather that absolute optimum performer. This is a bang for buck manifold and infortunately it is moreso a fitment before (optimum) function scenario.
 
As for collector, there are two candidates, an off the shelf 4 into 1 item paired with a longer (runner) type turbo manifold, of the brute design of the four runners meeting at the main corridor which can be then split by a baffle.
 
Leave it with me for a bit whilst I ponder the best option to take. If I am delaying your project (which I doubt) I apologise. Please also consider the payment date as very flexible as I haven't even brought many details to the table.

tuned length is where the shortest length pipe is the same length as the longest (all pipes the same length)

Except for all out high rpm big psi turbo setups equal lengths are not really necessary, unequal length with separators even log style manifolds with a simple separator in the middle make more torque than equal length. The articles Ive seen on the equal length versus log manifold in the honda and 4g63 forums show that simple log style manifold spool faster and makes 5-8% more torque till 5250rpm. After that the longer equal length manifolds makes 10-15% more. However an A series redlining at 6500rpm for a street engine or even 7000rpm at most is only going over 1250-1750rpm beyond the ideal log style manifolds sweet spot or ability. Therefore in reality the log style manifold is the best for street cars compared to the longer equal length fancy ones.
 
Just putting it out there nothing else, have you considered cast iron? You could base one primarily on the H95 or vanette cast iron manifold and then cut and shut with another cast iron turbo manifold end to suit a side mount. You can have both sections heated to 400 degrees and then have someone oxy brass braze the two together with a bit extra braizing so it can be sanded down with a flapper disc on a small angle grinder (brazing cast iron with brass is the closest welding material for cast iron repairs as both material almost are a match in terms of tensile ability and other properties)
 
The other way is to make a thick tube steam pipe setup and use brazing so its easy to clean up with a flapper disc on a mini angle grinder as mentioned or file down and polish up before making the sand molds. Could also be body filler or bogged up instead and shaped as needed.
 
The last way is to laser cut all the sides of the manifold and have them welded up. There are some clever turbo manifolds made this way and could be much easier in the end than using butt welds. I cant find the pics now of the ones Ive seen but have some pics of other manifolds to for an idea, oxy also helps to bend the flat metal sheets to shape contours needed.

The log manifold is the most likely candidate, what i was aiming for was a long runner type but the costs are high. I am progressing but it is slow. Will have some pictures later in the week. Fittings and seamless pipe are on their way later in the week from Brisbane.
By way of an update, albeit insignificant in the general scheme of things!
 
Buttweld fittings are arriving shortly before Christmas, extensive delays on those items. The laser cut flanges are also on their way in the same shipment. I have bought enough to make a fair few sets so I'm well depp into this project.

Ai, she is a fair bit back. I'm steering clear of the upper control arm, so it's either before or aft.
 
Any other design where it sits nice and high is going to require more material and more cost. There is also the issue of the stock inlet manifold getting in the way.
 
I will be offering a couple of options, the item above being the low cost one as it requires fewer bends and less work.
 
Will have another update some time soon.
Im beginning to wonder whether a two piece set is a better idea (inlet & exhaust manifolds).

TBH Chris, I would stick with one piece people can use what they like for inlet then.. ???
The objective is cost. I reckon if they are as simple as the one above I can drop the price fairly significantly. To keep costs low it is also important to ensure the users can use their own inlet manifolds.
 
Once the design gets creative and better performing, it begins to require a non-standard inlet manifold.
 
So it is looking like two design will come out of this; a base model - to suit standard manifolding and a more expensive model that also comes with an intake manifold.
 
What do you fellas think?
sounds perfect for us tight broke 1000 owners...lol
I'd leave them raw also, people can paint, ceramic coat, plate, whatever they like...
