Honda Civic radiator into 1000

Hey fellas

I'm hating the standard radiator in my 1000 its a bit crap and the top tank is leaking.

I am going to put a honda civic radiator in it.

I've done the measuring and it should fit if i remove then re-box a bit of the front lower cross member part then fit in behind the front bit under the bumper. The height is 420mm there is just about that if in that position.

Has anyone done/seen this?
I've seen a Hyujndai one in there before
Not sure how you'll run that bottom hose... but I guess if your creative it might work
That bottom rail under your rad is strenght... don't mod it unless your going to brace it again or you'll find your front end won't hold up too well
And remember the bumper mounts to it too

I've looked at a few rads... and we've even discussed alloy ones
But without proper meaurements of an original the Chinese man I spoke too wasn't too interested
Yer i had a look at that post.

I just bought one so its happening.

As for the bracing i was going to stich in a bar into the bottom of the bottom rail and tie it into the front radius arm or watever there called mounts. Along with using a bit heavier gauge steel for the boxing should be stronger than before.

I'll put some pics up
a Tripple core stock Rad IS the best option of all...
front bar is thin as glad wrap and it doesnt need much strength due to the suspension design but best box it up with halve 90 degree tube section

If you modify the inner guards at the front theres heaps of room for a bigger radiator in terms of length
ive fitted a renault fuego radiator but an mx5 should fit also

The B10 radiator is larger than the 1200 item so a triple core, or high fin count replacement core original will not only fit without mods but will handle just about any A series engine that can be driven on the street.

My radiator is the heavy duty [high fin count] replacement version & I do not expect any problems whatsoever.
KB10GL, the car I always wanted.
thanks for all the info guys appreciate it.

ive gone with the civic radiator due to being insanely cheap, if it breaks its just a honda part, outlet pipe size is simliar..ish and it comes with a cute little thermo.

I have considered getting the b10 one re-cored but the tanks are whats leaking and theres no point continuously fixing what is in my opinion a crappy old radiator that has been re-cond before and is still leaking. Theres also no way in hell that the standard unit even if made into a 3 core would provide more cooling than the honda radiator aswell as taking into account avaliabilty, cost and reliability.

I want to get the cooling system to a point were i can drive it everywhere on the floor boards without cooling issues.

I removed the radiator yestersday and there is a ton of space in there. There is also 2 - 3 additional inches of under bonnet clearance aswell so we should be sweet. I'll put some pics up on the build process once the radiator gets here.

were did ya find/make that heavy duty radiator mate?

cheers fellas
I had the core supplied & fitted by my local radiator repairer.
He just measured it up & had a new core made by his supplier.

same same,
stroll on into the local rad place,
Measure, and order from the book, there is a standard size tripple core to fit...
But you need to have the right tanks to fit the 3 core

eThe bits to cut.

the bits cut out

plate welded in (welded all the way around just tacked here)

The support tabs made up just rubber grommets and steel tabs with hole cut to suit. Mocked them up in place and tacked them with the radiator in the wanted position.

Civic radiator in used a bit of the alloy handle off the pool cleaner to lengthen bottom pipe. Some how the standard 1200 top raditator fits with no modification..... just.

Top mount same deal as bottom just bent flat bar with a bolt welded on the bottom for easy removal/instalation.

It ends up sitting slightly to the left of the center support, but cant really notice behind the grill, been running this set up for a few months now. Never goes past the half point and the thermo does a good job considering how cheap it all was. Cost about 150 bucks all up, sort of looks like an intercooler through the grill (which makes you look heaps cooler) and cools the car down killer.

off the subject does anyone have a spare 1000 4 door boot laying around they want to get rid of?
i got a boot in adelaide if you get desperate.
while i'm surfing,
if you block off that gap on the side of the rad, it will flow more air over the core, = win...
