Blueyes Disk conversion... , upgrade the front brakes...

Firstly, thanks for posting up the great writeup. Is there any particular model of commodore to pull the caliper frame off?

Secondly, I'm hoping to potentially use this setup on a 411 wagon front end, which I'm hoping may be identical to the 1k suspension.

Thirdly, I was doing some googling on girlock calipers, and came across a thread on ozdat where they had a picture of girlock front stanza calipers, they do look identical to the corolla ones, so may be another option (potentially easier) if you are looking for cars to get the calipers off.

Good work Pedro,
looks possible, we would have to check them side by side, perhaps the caliper frames might not need changing either???

commodore, well, VK,VL, VN... +++
Hey Dundee1000,
Just wanted to thank you for this thread. I peformed this conversion and can highly recomend it. All the parts were readily available at my local yard. If your in Adelaide all the corolla bits are plentiful. I did struggle to get the R31 brackets ( every R31 rear end had the bones allready picked) and did have to go to a nissan specific wrecker for them. One morning pull bits off wrecks and all in only cost me $170. that is a bargain I reckon.
Only downside is that my 13" watanabes don't fit over. Just means I have to start looking for another set of wheels

Thanks again
all good, Well done,
shame your Watts don't fit, both sets of mine do

if you find some more corolla calipers, snap them up, you can always post them over...
Guys anyone done a disc rear conversion?
I've never bothered, 650kg and drums works a treat
Oh trust me, I have no interest (yet) in upgrading the rears if I don't have to. But the wheel cylinders that I have costed up appear to cost a shit tonne, so I figured I'd ask the question as I don't want to spend $500 on drum parts if I can spend the same amount of rotors, calipers and make a bracket for a better outcome.

I'm in the process of sourcing the parts for this front conversion, will report back if it works on a P411.
Fair enuff too,
I've thought in my head, a very similar spec with the 31 brackets etc, but using the 'commodore' rear callipers, smaller piston, might be a good combo.... I think I have read people have got the 31 brackets to work... if i get chance I will do some study
bluebird s2 drums and some other gazelle drums can be fit and provide better handbrake than discs
and you can fit the finned ally drums from 240/260z straight on, heaven

Cheers for the info and good idea, have plenty of 510 parts lying around (and my brother has some finned alloy 260z stuff stashed somewhere).

I'm looking at the viability of suzuki swift stuff in place of R31 rear rotor at the moment, would just need to make the adaptor from R31 bracket to Swift caliper (or find a better caliper that suits that disc);

rear drums like that on blueys and 260z will stop the car rolling
when handbrake is on even if parked 90 on a pricipice!

Got my front knuckle off my P410 sedan, ripped all the drum brake gear off it including backing plate etc.

Found that the R31 rear disc doesn't fit over the hub face without machining of the hub or disc

Considering just grinding the disc for the purposes of testing since it's an old one and unlikely to be used. Also bought a set of R31 caliper brackets which I'll test out tonight.

Taking the verniers home today to measure the differences between the rotor and hub, if I do go with the original brake conversion in this thread I would consider machining the hubs if there is enough meat, just so I don't have to machine rotors each time.

Just an update not that anyone cares about 410's he he

Got the stanza calipers delivered yesterday, they were cheap so thought I'd have a crack, all the corolla guys want $150 + for their girlock ones.

Roughly trimmed the R31 caliper bracket for mocking, needs some filing to the inner hole to fit over the spindle

Confirming the stanza caliper mounting bracket does not have the same hole spacing as the R31 caliper so they at least need changing.

I think I have a set of VT Calipers somewhere which I'm hoping to steal the brackets off for testing (hopefully the same as VL etc). Will report back.
Confirming VT caliper mounts are too wide to bolt to the stanza calipers. Also had a R31 rear caliper and confirming the bracket is too narrow to bolt to the stanza caliper.

Does anyone have an old commodore bits they are using I can buy / swap?
I'm not really sure what the fuss is about, but the VN-VS commodore rear caliper works on a bluebird rear rotor, using the r31 backing plate. Need a twin pot master cylinder from a Datsun 120y, and on the rear use 1200 coupe cylinders that are still available.

I have commodore VN-VS rear calipers up for grabs. I am in Sydney too.
No fuss really Like I said in the first post it's been done with commodore rear calipers before,
Just the bias is wrong, many people have even tried with bias valves.
I think from memory you need about 80/20,
Neil chime in..
In the dry at normal roadspeed it might feel ok,
Emergency stop, wet or dirt roads might be a different story.
You may as well stick with the drums as they are very efficient.

The point of using the toyota/girlock calipers is the piston size is correct for the application.
I'm pushing forward with the girlock calipers, just need to find a cheap set of vl calipers to get the brackets from, then I'll sort the rest out.

Is this the master cylinder I'm going to need?

Did all 120y's come without a booster?
Also one more assumption is you just used stock corolla brake pads?
