front shocks?, who is using what?

hey guys,

I am hunting around for some front shocks. I have seen and asked about the pedders touring blacks. but from everything i have heard and experienced pedders shocks usually aren't great.. Anybody got the pedders in the front?  is there anything else that will fit or anybody know of a kyb shock for the 1000?

cheers,
mike.
I use a GTR Torana shock I modified and some stainless steel bottom pins and urethane bushes

Bit agricultural but thats all I could find at the time

I have the pedders in the front of my B10,
I still have not rego'd my car so I can't comment on the ride quality.

I can confirm they fit, (You need the original shock for the lower pins)
1967 Datsun B10 2 Door.
thought it would be useful to some people to know that datsport can get adjustable konis for a 1000 front end they have them for the rear aswell.. also as far as the rear is concerned datsport offer kyb exel g (factory spec) however, baz said that he would be able to get kyb gas adjust shocks for the rear but would need a few orders to make it worthwhile..
It all depends onwhat you want from your car but i just thought i would share my findings.
would you be able to find out the compressed lengths paddy? all of us with low thou's have trouble with rear shocks bottoming out. i can tell you peddars dont work, i've got a set of boges (i think they are) that beetwenty gave me which im yet to try and also some bilsteins but im assuming i might need to do some mods to get them to fit but they're the correct length i think and i can revalve them

edit - actually who thinks the front shocks would fit the rear? or is that a no no. there plenty short

RatB10 is using 1200 rear shocks in his 1000.

Also the Pedders part # 3029 listed for a 1000 front shock also has a listing for mini moke and mini front shocks.
I believe Dundee1000 has mini shocks in the front of his 1000.

Here is a link to a mini moke web page with some compressed and extended lengths shown.
http://www.mokesinc.org/index.php?topic=7616.0
As far as i can tell the mini ones will compress around 5mm further than a 1000 one but are not as long as a standard 1000 shock so might be good if lowering your 1000.
(Would a shorter extended length reduce body roll?)

It looks like maybe rears can go too? but lengths are slightly shorter like the fronts. Has anyone tried this?
It would definatley open up some aftermarket options if they fit.
A mini weighs much the same as a 1000 so mini shocks seem like a good substitute.
Mini's have a little more of their weight % distributed over the front wheels so for a heavier engine swap into a 1000 the mini shocks seem like a good idea.

EDIT.

Leith, The ones I gave you were a full car set of rebuilt original nissan ones
If you want to spend $300 each you can do anything you want...

thanks for the link ash i've been on that site before and never saw that. seems a bit pricey for a single shock i can get a whole coil over shock setup for 250.

i found a bilstein small body shock with a collapsed length of 201mm and extended length of 303mm so they will work for the front and rear. i'm hoping it will just mount straight on or i can just press out the bottom bush and replace them with the peddars ones i have. these shocks are $59 and i can revalve them for next to nothing.

once i get some time and space i'll be able to have a go at it properly, only bummer is i wont be able to fully complete it until the cars registered and i can stuff around with valve settings

just looking at your photo's neil did you make those bottom pins yourself? or are they cnc'd?

Leith, As a completley random idea... how about using a clamp around the shock and just mount at any height you want from the side.
Make something like what's in the pic below, but instead of the bolt mounting point have a tube/eye to mount rubbers into and fit it to the standard lower mount from your leaf spring mount.

You could use almost any shock length you want, if you lower your car even more in the future just slide the mount along your shock and retighten.

I would suggest a large clamping area if you were to try this as I don't imagine the shock manufacturers would have had this in mind when designing their shocks.

Or remake your lower mounts something like this
1967 Datsun B10 2 Door.
that'd be good actually only need another inch and standard shocks would work fine

im not real keen on clamping the shock, would maybe stress the wrong areas and collapse like a coke can. it could work, most of those shocks come with a collar for the coil over sleeve so maybe could be clamped below that that way there's no chance of it sliding through the clamp??

Thats a pretty good idea, after looking at the bottom spring plates on the rear of the sunny, 120y and 1000
its amazing how much smaller the 1000 ones are. Would be great to swap to the stronger later ones.

well story is i was sposed to have a pair of these weeks ago! i would of sent those down to you but at the moment im waiting on my mate to get back to me with a price because shipping from USA is just way to expensive end's up costing $100 a shock, but seems he's useless has either forgottten or doesn't care....

But i might of found another option for the rear, the bilstein shocks we use in the race cars are also pretty short but a bit fatter. so on friday im going to try fit one up and see how it goes, we've got boxes of them and they come with a wider range of dampening settings, are alot easier to get a hold of and are only $80

but here's the part number for the shock i was talking about bilstein ak105, i think there sposed to be for a mini. if you can find somone to import these cheap d let me know

edit - i was getting them off summit, but trying to get them from qld bilstein dealer for cheaper shipping! i'll get onto him today

For the front I have fitted Torana (LC, LJ, or TA) shocks to my 1000 since when I went to pedders and did a comparison for fully compressed and extended they matched the best. Then pedders wanted a bunch of money to get the bottoms cut off and welded, but I wasn't keen to keep my old bushes.
I bought some Torrie shocks anyway for cheap off ebay and found something when I went to look at the old pairs of 1000 shocks I had in the garage. There are two types of lower pins. Both same length, but two different diameter types. Pushed the metal sleeve out of the torrie shock and the larger (I think) pin fitted. You don't need to pay to get the pin pushed in or out when you have a vice.

didn't think it warranted a new thread BUT has anybody had any bad experiences with running too stiff a gas shock?
Only bending the bottom pin

Thats why I made some new ones
Neil any chance you can make a run of the SS pins for the rest of us?

No longer working in an engineering shop

Not too hard to make though if you have half a million dollars woth of equipment and an overpaid metal ctafter standing around.... lol
the home use CNC milling units are coming!!! just a matter of time

home made hubs, pistons, rods, pins, badges will be possible

I have Bilstiens in the front...dunno the details as they came with the car, I had them rebuilt a couple of years ago, just confirming they do exist and havent given me any trouble since
any chance you'd be able to get the part number off the shock body?
