5 speed for 1000's

I have seen 1000's advertised with a12 and 14 motors with a 5 speed behind them. What box is that and where do you get them?
There is a very good explination of A-Series 5 speeds on 1200.com
http://datsun1200.com/modules/mediawiki/index.php?title=5-Speeds

A-Series 5-Speeds go for around $1000 AU, give or take a few hundred dollars.
1967 Datsun B10 2 Door.
Well, if the final drive is still 1 to 1, then whats the point? I already spend more time changing gears than cruising.
Not all the a series 5 speeds are 1:1 final drive. Only some of the dogleg boxes were.

All the ones I hve seen are std shift patterns with a 5th overdrive.

Still the toyota t50 box is better value in my opinion.

56   5 speed = 1:1 & dogleg

60A 5 speed = overdrive & normal pattern

60L 5 speed = overdrive & dogleg
Any idea where to get a 5 with overdrive then?
Right place right time

Mal (weekend 1000) has them now and then

Or keep an eye out for someones offcasts (I'm selling a T50 later in the year)

But don't expect to get any change from $1000+

There is one more option not many know of but I came across it
some years ago on speedway is the Volvo box which is small as
a 4 speed and has a detachable electric overdrive unit giving
more than 6 different ratios. Wouldnt that be a treat!
Many speeway people used them behind A series in their minisprints
but thats going back 10 years ago and some werent perfectly aligned.

Hey guys, I've seen an NZ bloke cut and shut a S15 6 speed box with an A series bellhousing and fit it behind an A15 in his rally stanza.

For the price of an A series 5 speed i reckon it's worth looking at this option with an L series box or similar.
the 6 speed is 45+ kg which is 3 x 56a 4 speed boxes
also 6 speed is over the top really. It be good to have a
4 speed with 1;1 3rd gear and overdrive 4th as 1st and
2nd could easily be 2.6;1 and 1.8:1 etc.

The point is that the true five speed allows a much better use of whatever power your engine develops
I used a 56A five speed in my '68 sedan for something like fifteen years & it transformed the car into a thing of joy.
[The big bore 1200 GX engine helped too of course]

There is no way that my Coupe is rolling out of the shed without one & I still have that gearbox  from my 1000 sedan.

If you need taller gearing, think seriously about a higher ratio diff.
KB10GL, the car I always wanted.
Does anyone know where to purchase an adapter for A series to T50 apart from the expensive Dellow one?
Never heard of anyone else doing one

You could always use an auto bellhousing and make your own
