Anyone got any photos of the front suspension on a 1k?, Looking at disc brake upgrade options

Hey guys,

I've got a 411 wagon that has 4 wheel drum brakes all round. Considering a front disc upgrade to something to something like a solid disc and single piston caliper purely because you just can't buy the drum gear for 411's anymore.

I see maddat does a 1k disc upgrade so I'm interested to see whether the 1k front suspension arms and spindles are similar if not identical to the 411 gear.

Any help appreciated. Also if anyone has some suggestions on calipers and rotors that may suit that are off current models and easy to come by I'd love to here your input.

I'm aware of the sigma upgrade, but would prefer something more current & mainstream.

Cheers
More mainstream would be Neils Laser setup or what some peeps have done is a silvia setup

Cheaper and although thin the rears of the Pintara, commonhore combo is still perfect and
thicker than renault R8 gordini setup as our cars are all under 700kg

Tell me more about Neils lazer setup, or a link if possible. Any idea what rim they fit under?

At a guess I reckon a solid rotor would be an easier fit, but open to a vented rotor if fitment around steering items isn't a big issue.

I might try and bleed the drums and see what love I get from the cylinders as an interim as it will only be powered by a J15, but longer term I'll need to replace all that stuff.

I don't think these brakes have been used for at least 10 years so it's not promising.
Plenty of 1000 info in the manual

I've never played with a 411 so not sure my stuff would fit
But if you give me an email addy I'll send you some info regarding it that might give you some ideas
Also have a look through this for pics of a standard 1000 setup.

Just look through the topics within the service section on the links in the left.

Thanks for the pics and links. Here is a pic of the front drum/hub setup on the 411, which looks pretty similar to the 1k drum and hub setup

Neil what conversion do you use?

I've got more pics of the suspension somewhere, just have to get them off my camera.
I use KC Laser calipers and discs on a fabricated hub
Ok no worries. Fabricated hub sounds To expensive for this project I've got going.

I might see if I can use a complete spindle off something else, might be an easier option. Will postan update if I find anything.
I took a couple of pics of a 320 ute today that had disc brakes
Not sure if they are similar... will upload once I dump them off the camera

They look like a15 vanette ones judging by position and caliper if not mistaken

That conversion looks a lot like what a guy in the states was doing, but the brackets were welded (which I think they are, but remember I'm tilting my head sideways and my eye site is questionable).

Here is his site -> http://www.bluehandsinc.com/

Unfortunately welded components are legal in nsw.
You don't need to weld anything if you have a nice flat spot to bolt a bracket too

Then you just need to adapt the disc to fit
My original car had fatcory hubs I drilled and tapped to accept the disc
Later I decided to make a hub to do the job

If you can find a disc to slide over the hub with the right offset it makes life easier and no need to make a hub

Take a look at some of the 1000 conversions for ideas
Nothing wrong with welding Pintara/Skyline rear caliper brackets to fill up the holes.
You are filing up holes then redrilling new ones, no engineer can pick that up or needs
to as you smooth the surface after welding and these brackets are super strong.

Welding up holes in a bracket to redrill new ones isn't an issue for the R31 rear conversions, I've done it myself on my 180b. I was referring to welding 2 pieces of metal together to form a caliper bracket to do a front caliper conversion.

I'm working on the motor for this thing at the moment, hopefully can get it assembled and installed then I'll move onto the brakes.

Apart from replacing the master cylinder I'm hoping the drum brake gear isn't seized, time will tell.
you cant weld the bracket its illegal pretty sure they have to be one piece

I'ved used pulsar discs and VL calipers, with a proportional valve for the back brakes.  At a later date I think I will look for an upgrade to the rear.

Just coming back to this. I have been doing some thinking over this and thought it may be easier to find a replacement spindle to knock over a bunch of limitations for brake upgrades, wheel fitment etc.

I came across an article from the USA talking about 1991 nissan hardbody drop spindles (which are pathfinders I believe). Which led me to find a ratsun thread where someone said (and put up a pic) they bolt onto a datsun 620.

Looking at them in the photo they actually look like they may work on a 411 to.

I'm still a way off getting to that stage, but those drop spindles would work a treat especially if I bag my wagon, just need to find a suitable hub or fab one. Knowing nissan plenty of hubs probably fit with a 4x114.3 stud pattern.
