ok for the good of the 1000 comunity,
*this is a suggestion* you can choose to try it yourself, engineer it do what you like....
ok, Thanks to a good mate Neil, we bashed heads and added up what fits together....
many people cant be bothered maintaining their front drum brake setup in good working order, and yes water does play havoc on direction when the brakes are applied....
I have put together a setup that works fine for me, I wouldn't suggest it if your going 300+++ Hp CA18 or something, this is a mild upgrade for a Thou...
many people have come close to this setup using comodore (ie vk vl etc rear calipers on the front but soon find that they arent as efficient as the rears and have rear lockup before the fronts are doing the job,
you need, R31 rear caliper brackets,
a set of KE55-KE70 corolla Girlock front calipers,
(ok, this is the hard bit to get, the corolla lads use them as an upgrade for the earlier corollas, and some of them had Japanese calipers, so be sure they are the Girlock ones!!!)
R31 rear disks (4 stud)
you need a set of Commodore rear caliper mounts/frame bit,
I used a KB10 master cylinder as thats what i had in stock,
you can use the KB10 rear brake line a and the 3 port junction from the same car,
what you need to do:
1, bin the front brakes on the Thou, backing plates etc, keep the brake hose,
keep the hardware, bolts, nuts locking tabs,
2, take the 31 caliper bracket, slide it over the spindle, you will see if you centralise it, you can get one hole to line up,
mark the other 3 and drill them to suit, you can now bolt this puppy up using the original hardware that you've cleaned and pained,
3, now your new 31 rotor, slides right over the 1000 hub (you should repack the bearings while your there), job done,
4, calipers, take you Corolla calipers, bin the mounting frame bit (as these don't fit up to the 31 brackets), grab the frame and pins off your commodore callipers (bin the calliper bit), fit them to your corolla castings.... bingo...
bolt the calipers to the 31 calliper mounts...
it's starting to look like a setup,
5, youll find the stock brake hoses (that should be new as you've recently replaced them, and they were 40+ years old and shagged) route nicely into the callipers,
6,, swap over the master cylinder, replace the brake line and block,
bleed them up...
job done...
Notes, ok the improvement on past trials using the commodore rear calliper, is, these calipers are from,
a, the front of a corolla,
b, it's a heavier car,
c, they use solid rotors,
d, they are unboosted,
e, the castings, Corolla and commodore rear, look identical, so don't mix them up,
f, the piston in the corolla unit is bigger than the commodore rear unit, hence the correct ratio,
do yourself a favour, bung calliper kits in,
buy new brake hoses,
you can use the old rear brake line, but, you will need to make a short line to mate up from the master cylinder to the old line, and need a joiner,
you can use the old brake line block, but you need to block off two ports, these parts are available to buy,
thats about all I can think of,
I used slotted rotors, on mine,
if you don't understand, don't do it, get somebody that is competent...
Neil, buzz in if i have missed anything,
please chime in if you have a suggestion...
if your stuck for bits, (other than callipers) ie the block off bits, pipe joiners, caliper kits, master cylinders,
if you PM me I can try to help, I can get new brake hoses and perhaps the other bits,
now I've done this for the good of the thou community, don't rape it,
don't wander off making kits and reaming people, on fleabay, reamtree or stalkbook,
the Corolla callipers will be the hardest bit to find, be patient....
it looks factory, they fit over 13"s, but not 13" steel wheel ie sunny,
