As it turns out, the winders on a 1000 require there to be almost nothing behind them, so foam or board behind the winder is probably not the best way of doing these if staying with the original 1000 winder handles. The original cards are just vinyl...

You can get your steering box rebuilt. I had one rebuilt locally for about $200 a few years back. Getting a good one without play now is pretty hard. They all have play in them.
