"Maybe look for another a12 from someones upgrade to ca or sr for the meantime while you can decide what to do with your A12, I feel a sneaky A14 cranked A12 is a good upgrade with headers, ignition and lightened flywheel. Punchy & thrifty"

"The verdict is in.   After cleaning out the pcv valve and pipe and replacing the rocker cover gasket (as a precatuion), the Bush Mechanics a.k.a. Neil & Dundee confirmed that the cause is what I was hoping it wasn't...   Time for a re-ring!   Now to..."

"Maybe doesnt have a PCV valve as prob previous owner used a combo of A10 and A12?  Could have blocked the engine breather with a welsh plug as had done on my A12 on time. Any engine pics on the inlet ex side to see?"

"I didn't consider a catch can. Chris (Clyons8) suggested checking/replacing the pcv valve, which I never thought of either.  Seeing as that's the easiest (and cheapest) possibile cause/fix, I'll have a go a that first."
