Beetwenty's B10 2 door

I also decided to use some new upper control arm bushings on a spare set of arms for when i do the big swap over.

My project is going to slow down now untill after Xmas.

Ill do some cheaper things, but nothing too spendy for now.

Hopefully i can get into finishing my brake swap, sort out seatbelts etc early next year and then finally install my A14.

Looking foward to it.

On a side note, i over spent today and bought some plates for my 1200 ute/Daily driver.
Not exactly part of my 1000 build, but it is the final big buy for me pre Xmas.

I decided to clean up my spare front leaf spring pack.

I was unsure about how much spring tension would be waiting to spoing all over the garage when undoing the retaining clips so i used a pair of clamps before prying them apart with a flat screwdriver.

Turns out not much at all.
Once apart i found alot of surface rust on my leafs.

After a quick clean up it was clear that my leaf springs had been wearing on each other, causing a lipped edge along my spring.

I decided to linish these edges down until they were most of the way gone as i will be using spring liner when i reassemble it again.

Because i am using a spring liner i also decided to round the end and corners of my leafs.

Then a coat of primer on the top side.
I ran out of primer so will finish the other side and paint black tomorrow.

Will probably be a few weeks until i put these back together. Got to wait for the ebay postman to deliver from USA.

Also, it looks like i may have an extra bottom leaf in my pack.
Think I'm going to leave this in for the added weight of my A14.

I primered the inside of my leafs this afternoon.
Then i decided to be a mad scientist and brew up an experimental paint for the high friction ends of my leafs.

I mixed up a 50/50 mix of paint and graphite powder.

I brushed my mad scientist paint onto the ends with a brush and then painted the remainder of my springs with normal gloss black paint.

Hopefully my graphite paint will help to keep things smooth well into the future.

luv Ya Work Ash,
I look at what you do , I don't know if it's because Im a mechanic and have no patience whn it comes to wanting it back together.... can do, must breathe and be patient...
I feel the Wagon is bumping up the list of things to do... do a good Job.. Ash shows it can be done... ha ha
Thanks Dundee.

I think because most of the projects i have taken on are my first time, I get worried im not doing things well enough.

So i go overbored to ensure im not doing too little.

I often look at how others have solved similar problems.
Then I try to look at it from first principals and ignore what others have done... then blend the two.
So far this approach has worked out for me.

If i had done it all a million times before id know where i can reduce unnecessary effort.

But I do agree, I have patience. (Except for waiting for paint to dry, i always want paint to dry instantly).

While im waiting for my spring liner to arrive in the post, i have decided to make up something to stop the main bolt in my leaf pack from turning when tightening up the nut from below.

I wanted to be able to tighten it up as my painted leaf wears, but am concerned that the head of the bolt will be out of reach when everything is assembled.

I cut up a socket that will be welded to a plate.

My plate is slightly longer than an old leaf rubber i have lying about the garage and matches the leafs 50mm width.

I have added large holes on the ends to keep any flexing away from the welds that will join the socket to my plate.

(The pic above has a nut/bolt which will be removed after welding)

Ill stick up some pics of it welded/painted and rubber glued on once it is done.

I decided to cut my welded on socket down to match the height of a bolt head to eliminate the possibility of it visiting the bottom face of my sump.

Here is how it will sit against the leaf pack.

Cant wait for my liner to arrive.

Ash your b10 will be the car datsun would have ended up with if it remained in production for 20 years

Its funny that you phrased it like that D.
I have had a similar idea when making decisions about what to modify and how far to go with any mods.

Im aiming to have the car appear as a special model to someone unfamiliar with 1000's rather than a mix of datsun parts from various models and tons of home done mods.

So far im happy with how close ive got to my goals.

It makes me happy to hear something like this  from someone who clearly knows 1000's.

We are here because of you guys and your builds so we are happy
and motivated to see you do to what these cars deserve as they only
had 2 years or less in the market versus its other models.
You are showing the development a good auto maker would have done
to improve the model in every way. They are a real treat considering
their ac cobra wheelbase, good handling, solid design and weight/hp
that can compare to original kent powered lotus 7 or caterhams yet
are protected from the elements and has a comfortable driving postion.

Got my spring liner in the post last week, but got distracted with maintaining my local MTB trails.

This weekend I decided to assemble my front spring.

I did not use any liner between the 3 top leaf springs.
Because of the added thickness of my extra lower leaf spring  my metal retainers would not wrap around the entire pack with a liner between each leaf.
I coated my leaf centre bolt in some nickel antisieze for smooth retightening as my liner/paint settles in.

I then glued my B310 leaf spring pad to my leaf pack with some Sika. (And filled above my bolt to stop water collecting in my welded on socket).

Then it was time to use my NOS crossmember  rubbers.

With all my parts refreshed it was now time for assembly...
With many g-clamps and some hard work i managed to get it all together. (Coated my bolt shanks in copper eze grease to help with future water/rusting).

All nuts have nyloc inserts as well.

Now that it is all assembled it feels like it will have a very firm spring rate.

I hope its not too stiff or too high.
If it is then im removing the extra lower leaf.
That is a task i hope i dont need to do in the future... time will tell.

Ash.
1967 Datsun B10 2 Door.
Well after only 1 day i have decided to take out the extra leaf.

Im afraid of making my 1000 into a monster truck with the extra leaf.

The assembly process was far simpler as well, so im guessing the extra leaf added that little bit too much thickness.

I have decided to use a nolathane bump stop as my leaf end pads. (Hopefully)
If it dosnt peel off the metal backing plate im hoping the smaller contact area will reduce friction between the pad and leaf.

Will still keep the stockers incase it fails on me.

Ash.

My rubbers arrived today.
I had to knock the tiniest bit off two corners to get these in.

Looking at how my car currently sits... these rubbers should have the spring pressing downward through the centre line when installed and sitting at resting height.

So I think I will give these a try and see how they perform.
1967 Datsun B10 2 Door.
This afternoon i removed my "deluxe" emblem from my boot lid and replaced it with a "sports" emblem that i had lying about in my stash.

I definitely prefer this emblem combo over what i had.

1967 Datsun B10 2 Door.
thanks for the images with the front leaf pack.

That is the next job on my project after the rear axle.

Did you have the leaves resprung or just painted and back in?

Stiffening up the springs for a better feel is a good idea, but you dont want a monster truck as you said. I have found spring places who just bend the springs more rather than stiffen up and keep the same ride height.

Oh and I think I NEED a sports badge..... and maybe a sunny 1000 badge as well....
I just painted the leafs and put them back in.

No idea on how successful the spring project has been as it is still not in the car.

Im guessing there are still unknowns in my future with it all.

Most likley I will need my red leaf pad heights adjusted.

If i need to go up with ride height i have my eye on a set of prothane universal bump stops from ebay, and if i need to go lower down im chopping the ones i have.

As for emblems, i had to decide if i wanted to cut pins from a genuine emblem or drill holes in my car as the factory location is passenger side of the boot lid and has a different pin spacing.
I thought the factory location looked overley busy with "sunny 1000" and "deluxe" also on the drivers side.

I decided to cut the pins off the emblem and sikaflex it on.
1967 Datsun B10 2 Door.
You can get Urethane spring saddles from the Japans..
and urethane shackle bushes and eye bushes, this helps out heaps in the back end, as there is no "panhard rod" it is good to settle the sideways movement on the spring pack a bit
I have not done the spring saddle. Maybe oneday...

I have done eye and shackle bushes in Nolathane
These made a noticable difference to how the car drives.

On another Note... Andrewzuku helped out and designed an emblem for me.

I am having it 3D printed in stainless steel (Postage should be mid-late January), then ill give it the emrypaper/polish and see how shiny I can get it.

Hopefully the finish works out ok, as I really like the idea of this on my guards.
1967 Datsun B10 2 Door.
Im with you on the badging.

Thats Coupe Sports logo? or was that for the Deluxe ?
It is an emblem that never existed.
I just thought that i should remove the deluxe emblems from my guards now that i have removed it from my bootlid.

I guess you could call it a "Sunny Sports" emblem as i wanted it to match in with my other sunny emblems as well as my sports emblem.
